backfire causes and cures?

On closing throttle I ofter hear pops from the stock exhaust (more like farts). These aren't super loud like backfires, but it's obviously fuel being ignited in the exhaust. They occur randomly on closing throttle without regard to how hot the engine is, or how many rpm's I was running before closing the throttle. Are there common reasons for these noises that I could check? I have a completely stock engine/exhaust setup, with no carb mods (no mixture screw changes, no new jetting, etc). The only change on my CA model bike is the removal of the carbon cannister and associated plumbing. Thanks, Ben

This is symptomatic of the lean stock carb settings on the low speed circuits, back the pilot screw out to 2 turns and it goes away, along with improved off idle throttle response. Brad A15

Here's how I fixed mine. I was hauling ass down a hill, accidentally turned off the bike with the kill switch. When I realized a few seconds later, I turned it back on and had what sounded like a shotgun blast come out the back. Not a peep since, no tweety, no farting. Would I recommend it to anyone else? Without liability, it worked for me. Of course I also shot a glasspack about 50 yards when I was a kid doing the same thing in my mercury capri. Blew one hell of a hole in the headers too. Just worked for the bike, and I see/feel nothing different other than it not farting. Good luck, and DON'T say I told you to do it. millerized

I once broke a piston in a Chevy small-block from doing this a little bit too much.

I am about to buy a 1990 Tengai, 8k miles, for what I consider top dollar, $2500. Can anyone convince as to why I should buy a 96 or newer KLR650? I like the lower fender on the Tengai as well as the rarity, but I realize I will go off road less, due to the extra body work. I also think it may be harder to resale when the time comes. I do like the blue KLR's, but there pretty hard to find nearby. I think I could probably get a nice KLR with some extras for the same $ or pretty close. Will the Tengai be hard to sell? I have enjoyed this site as it has given me gobs of info related to KLR's. Appreciate any input!! Jeff
