Sounds like the stock KLR battery is pretty weak. I've been
researching batteries, and came across the Odyssey PC545. Anybody
got one? Its pricey, but in the long run, might be worth it.

Here are some advantages listed on Dual Stars site:

 - Unlike conventional batteries that need to be recharged every six
to twelve weeks, the ODYSSEY battery will maintain up to 50% state
of charge after 2 years if stored at room temperature (770F).At
temperatures lower than 770F, storage times will be even longer.

 - The sealed Drycell design of the ODYSSEY battery eliminates the
need for vent tubes; further, no routine maintenance is required and
there is no more fear of acid burns or damage to expensive chrome or
 paint.

 - Super vibration resistance: ODYSSEY batteries have endured very
rigorous tests that demonstrate their overall ruggedness and
 exceptional tolerance of mechanical abuse.

Whoever said the stock KLR battery was weak? I don't recall anyone ever
complaining that they thought their OEM battery didn't do the job it was
intended to do unless it was old. ALL batteries get weak with age (even the
Odyssey battery you mentioned) OEM batteries are usually made by Yuasa and
are very good batteries (less than half price of the Odyssey) You could buy
three Yuasa batteries for what the Odyssey is selling for. Just because
something costs more doesn't make it better. Don't believe everything you
read. (especially on the Internet) I am sure the Odyssey is a fine battery
but there are other sealed batteries out there that cost much less and will
 perform just as well.

I guess I just assumed it, with all the talk of people charging their
batteries all the time. I'm new to these types of bikes and wondered
why it was necessary to charge the battery so often. I thought maybe
there were better batteries that wouldnt require the maintenance and
frequent charging. Newbie mistake I guess.

Not a mistake at all. If you have been around batteries and bikes long
enough, you will find out that it is a good idea to keep your battery
charged up over the winter. Most all small batteries will loose a
percentage of their charge by just setting around. It is a good idea to
keep them charged up to prevent sulfation which is the death on any battery.
A discharged battery can freeze in the winter time more easily than a
charged battery. When you charge a lead acid battery you will loose a small
amount of the water that is in the battery. A sealed battery doesn't loose
any water since it is sealed but they all require charging from time to
 time.

				happy trails footpegs

One of the flimsy footpegs on my Happy Trails highway bar is a little
mangled/bent/collapsed. Has anyone come across an upgraded footpeg that
 will fit these bars?
