helmet recommendations??
Well, I figured I should go ahead and get a helmet. At first I was
going to go with a dirt helmet like the Bell Moto 7, but then decided
I should also look for something that would work well on the street
AND dirt.
Here's 3 helmets I'm considering (see below). Since I want to do
some touring eventually, I figured a flip up face mask would be nice,
and the Shoei has that. Thoughts on that and these 3 helmets? Feel
free to recommend others...
Shoei Syncrotec (Flip Up):

You'll probably get as many differing thoughts on this as there are Listers, here's mine. Of the three, *I* would go with the Arai. IMHO, The Bell would be a pain on the street, not having any of the advantages of full enclosure - bugs, grit and pebbles can get at your face, working their way around goggles and certainly glasses. In colder weather you close the shield and vents of a traditional full face and have that much more protection; in warmer weather you can open the vents and crack the shield a click or two for air circulation. With a moto helmet, you're "out there." Period. IMHO, there seems to be two camps on the flip-up helmets, such as the Shoei. The convenience is great, I'm sure, but there are those who are concerned about the action / reaction of that type of helmet in a crash. I haven't specifically looked into this, haven't done any research. The potential for trouble was enough to warn me off. IMHO, a good traditional full face, like the Arai, is the best way to go. I bought the DOT / Snell approved HJC CL-12 or 13, I'm not sure of the model number, and love it. My reasons for avoiding the Bell moto helmet, are the very reasons that I would want to buy the Arai. (My HJC fits perfectly, is Snell approved, and cost $199.00 from the dealer.) I bought from the dealer so I could test fit. An XL offering from one company wasn't necessarily XL in other brands. Those are all fine helmets, but if you are planning on doing cool
weather riding, you'll definately want to get one with a visor. On a 40
degree day at 30 miles an hour you'll be shocked at how brutally cold
it is to any exposed body parts. Also, make sure to get a jacket that
zips all the way up to your chin. It doesn't have to be an expensive
leather one. I wear a Columbia ski jacket that is perfect.
Good luck,
Brad

I have the HJC LT-12 which is now the LT-20. It is a good helmet,
lightweight carbon fiber construction and fairly priced.

Like bikes helmets are a compromise and having two is
a better solution. I, as another lister, have the HJC
LT12 probably one of the best for the buck, well rated
by Motorcycle Consumer News, Full coverage and
reasonable, I got mine on Ebay for about $150. I
recently got a dirt helmet from a former lister
slightly used, I think they retail for $125. Also an
HJC, mid line. Dirt seems lighter, using goggles is a
lot better off road for ventilation and being able to
use tear offs, having the visor is also a plus and
replacement sheilds dont cost nearly so much, just
new goggle lens. Also available on EBay. My thought
would be to shop wisely and get one of each, best deal
in the long run. BTW dirt helmets suck for street
use.

As far as flip-up helmets go, many people seem to think highly of the
Nolan N-100. If I were in the market for the helmet I'd definitely
give it a good look.

I too have the HJC Sy-Max... and am very happy with it.... I chose a
flip-up because I wear glasses... It is such a pain to take my glasses off
then to put them back on when wearing a full face.
It is noisy at speed... though earplugs REALLY help. I've been just using
the foam ones... is there a consensus of "the right type" of earplugs??
Cheers...

I keep several pairs of a couple of different types with me. I stashes 'em in my jacket pockets, tankbag pockets, and a couple up my butt case I gets thorown in jail. But they're all different types. I got them silicon ones (work good) and some orange foam ones (work good too, they're 'leights') and some reg'lar fome ones.....I forget now what they wuz called. I like the HJC lids myself. Thinkin about gettin on o those AC-10s, with removable face lingerie.
