Hey Mark, why would it make a difference if I adjusted the tensioner with the cover off? I haven't done that, but right now I have the side cover off and if that would make a difference ... After looking at the shop manual and probing as best as I can with a magnet, there is no broken metal in there, and I'm guessing my spring may have come off... It's a 99 with 16 k miles, if that makes a difference. CA Stu A13 Riverside CA Hey Stu, Have you adjusted the tensioner while you have the cover off? Has the tensioner run out of travel? If you're out of travel and there's still slack, the only things I can think of are that maybe a chunk of chain guide broke off, or, you may have had a failure of the tensioner lever itself (http://www.personal.psu.edu/mjv2/IdlerLever.jpg)

tensioner with the cover off? Difference is, you can see if the tensioner arm has any travel left. If it looks like there's more room to move and it doesn't move, then it probably is an MIA spring. If it just doesn't have any left, you may have to replace the chain, or the spring may be stretched too far. dat brooklyn bum
