				I hope anyone can tell me how a powerband on a bike works. I've got 
 KLR 600 and a KDX 200. I know what the effect of the powerband is but 
 have got no idea how it works and no one in the KDX group seems to 
 know the answer...so, I thought I'd give the guys at my KLR Group a

				Powerband, think of a graph plotting RPM on one axis
 and power developed on the other.  Different bikes
 have different reasons for their powerbands, the KDX
 has a relatively flat powerband for a small dirtbike,
 meaning  there is a relatively even or smooth delivery
 of power regardless of the motor rpm.  The KLR is
 similar. I had a 500cc Suzuki roadracer that had no
 power until 6500 rpm and then it came on as if someone
 had lit a stick of dynamite.  Your KDX would be a
 handlefull to ride in the woods if the power curve was
 like that.

Forgive me if I'm being to basic here, but you probably want to 
 define powerband, then get into how it works, or what it does. 
 
 Powerband is simply a term that describes when the engine is running 
 at a rpm range that produces usable power. So when most bikes idle, 
 they are not in their powerband, give it a little gas, and you start 
 getting into the "powerband". What gear you are in will also affect 
 when the bike "feels" like it is getting into the powerband, and of 
 course you can graph the power characteristics of an engine by 
 plotting torque and horsepower over a rev range, but I'll leave that 
 discussion to the Kevin Cameron types amongst us. 
 
 Some bikes produce nice usable power sooner in the rev range, some in 
 the middle, and some way up top, and some seem to do it in all spots. 
 
 So, powerband itself doesn't do anything, it just describes the power 
 characteristics of the engine. 
 
 Does the power come on sudden: a thing powerband
 Does it have power at all rev ranges: a flat powerband
 
 You get the idea.

				After moving it's time to rearrange the fleet. So the most likely bike to go 
 is my A-15' Bought : 4/24/01
 Mileage: 1025
 Accessories: Moose bash plate, Tank panniers ( rider warehouse standard size)
                     Dual Star headlight guard, centerstand, shim kit ( 
 Arrowhead)
 Engine was broke in according to specs. and the 500 mile service was actually 
 done ( with valve adjustment) by the dealer. Side covers have some surface 
 scratches otherwise the bike is in perfect condition. Located in So. Cal.
 Asking $4200./Best

A "powerband" isn't something that actually "works", it's not like a
 mechanical piece or anything. A powerband is a range of RPM in which an
 engine makes the most hp/torque. Think of it as a graph. The graph starts
 out very small at first with low rpm's, and gets higher with more rpm's. The
 "powerband" is where the graph is at or near it's maximum peak. Say for
 example, your powerband might be between 3500 and 7000 rpm. The KLR's power
 really drops off after about 7000 rpm.
