add kick starter to 2001 klr650

It looks like the entire kick starter system from the klr600's can be applied to a 2001 klr 650? Anyone tried it successfully? Also it looks like the genorator covers from the 600 can replace the 650's as well for eclectric starter motor reoval? Anyone? Thanks- Dave.

Dave, Retrofitting a starter is only possible on pre-'96 with the old "crappy" clutch basket that has a gear attached to the back of the clutch basket. This gear is required to interface with the kickstarting mechanism. The newer clutch baskets have an as-cast hub in the same location as the gear on the older baskets. I retrofitted a new style clutch basket to my '94, and one of things I gave up when I did that was the ability to ever add a kickstarter, if I wanted to. Richard in Tucson 94 KLR650 86 VFR750

You aren't missing much!! I added the kickstarter to my 1993 A7 thinking it could be a lifesaver if I was stuck in the woods with a dead battery. I am 5'10" and 175 lbs and have never been able to kick over this bike enough to even get it to 'pop' much less start. I think you need to be at least 6' 2 and 250 lbs to reliably kick start this beast. I even have a centerstand now and still can't jump down on the kickstarter hard enough to start it up. Needless to say, now I am a fanatic about keeping the battery maintained and charged properly.

You wanna sell the adapter? I am sure my 235lbs might be able to kick it over and it would impress all the girls around here ;) A question for any other city riders: Do you find that you get a lot of respect and attention from the African-American community when you're riding your KLR? I live in SE DC and wherever I ride, every kid that sees me and wants me to wheelie, some come up and grab the throttle and try and rev the bike while I am at a stop light. This never happened on my equally bad looking Concours... Strange thing is I feel safer riding in the marginal neighborhoods when I am on my KLR because I feel visible (I know that may sound like it contradicts general street safety, but all the attention that I get is respectful attention, people come up and want to know about the bike, what it's like, who I am, if I'll go riding with them, etc. etc.)... I just find it odd. I know if I was on a sport bike, I would fear it being stolen, but with the KLR, I will go into a store, do my shopping, and when I come out, I have people waiting to talk to me. Much better theft protection that being invisible! Z

You need to have the piston in exactly the right position for a kickstarter to work at all. On an inline-4 or a two-stroke single you can just kick from any position and it will fire. BUT on a thumper, the kickstarter will barely spin the motor around twice, so you need to be just past TDC and beginning the power stroke, when you kick. The SR has a manual decompressor AND an indicator window on the end of the cam, so it's easy to position. The auto-decompressor on the KLR would make finding the position of the piston by feel somewhat difficult I would think. "Compression" when the decompressor is engaged, and the cam opening a valve, feel very similar. If you could figure out the position of the piston, it would make kickstarting a lot more reliable. OR remove the auto-decompressor- then you could kickstart it reliably (but you'd have trouble with the electric starter. Devon A15 Zachariah Mully wrote:

It's kinda funny, except the ones that insist you ain't a man if you don't wheelie for them. I usually tell those guys, "Grow some tits and I'll pop a wheelie for ya." Lots of neighborhood kids want to touch the bike and look on longingly when I start it up. I'll usually give the kids a couple of obnoxious revs to get the smiles going and then if the traffic is light, I *might* wheelie for them (don't like going mono in the city very often -- too many bad memories). dat brooklyn bum

I doubt very much that removing the auto-decompressor would do any more than cause a lot of consternation. If the starter motor with its significant gearing would not be able to turn the engine over then I doubt that jumping on the kicklever would get it over TDC. I recall the "fun" I had many years ago with a borrowed XT500 of unknown maintenance history. If it wasn't for the decomp system then there was no way I could get it past TDC, and that was with a motor that is smaller than a KLR, and likely with lower compression ratio too.
