helping the klr breathe better?

Post by Jonathan Sykes (SWUS) » Tue Sep 18, 2001 11:41 am

I recently put a Cobra pipe on my 01 KLR650. I was pretty surprised at how much better the bike seems to 'breathe' now. Seems a lot more resposive, stronger. I'd be interested in any other improvements I might be able to make to the bike to remove other restrictions. I don't want to decrease the bike's fuel economy at all and don't want to spend a lot of money. Perhaps drilling some holes in the airbox, improved jetting - that kind of thing. I'm in Denver, at 5600 feet so that might limit what I can do? I understand the carb is better suited to high altitude in stock form. Any help, previous thread pointers or web urls much appreciated. Thanks!

Jonathon, Actually rejetting your bike for high altitude with a dyno-jet kit and "airing out" your air box will greatly improve your performance... I believe the KLR comes with like a 148 main jet (at least mine did)... The jet that you use in the dyno-jet kit is a 136 or maybe a 140 since you have an after market exhaust as well (after altering your air box) Dyno-Jet kits are about $63.00 you can order one from Fred Hink at www.arrowheadsports.com or pick one up at any Kawasaki dealer.. Either way it will probably have to be ordered/mailed to you. Steve G. and myself recently dyno-jetted my bike (A9), and "aired out" my air box... It runs much better now and I get MUCH better gas milage (Quicker acceleration, throttle response, and much more power at altitude (10,000 - 12,000+ ft)... The 148 main jet I had was WAY too rich. Any other questions let me know... I'm sure Steve G. would be willing to help you as well. Steve G. and I live in the Denver area too. Let's go riding! P.S. I also got a coupon for a free dyno run with my dyno kit. Later, Fletch

Cutting stategically placed holes in your airbox to increase airflow/volume.
