mechanical engineers or metallurgy experts?

Post by vespadaddy@hotmail.com » Tue Aug 28, 2001 10:51 pm

Hello all, i recently purchased a 93 KLR 650. When I bought the bike, it had a stripped footpeg mount (both 8 mm bolts, right side). I don't know why it stripped, but I suspect it is because the stock bolts were used when a center stand was installed, and the bolts were thus too short because the stand mounts between the frame and the peg bracket. As a solution, I installed 8 mm helicoils in the stripped holes. Here's the question: Are regular steel bolts strong enough for the footpeg mounts? The bolts I removed (too short) weere stainless steel. I replaced them with steel bolts with 8.8 and a triangle stamped on the head. Are these likely to break or shear under the stresses of spirited offroading? Do I need to get the appropriate lenght bolts in s steel? Thanks! Dan PS How did I do on price? It is a 93 KLR 650, 12,000 miles great shape (aside from stripped peg bolt holes), and a load of aftermarket goodies, including re-padded seat, bash guard, Acerbis handguards w/aluminum reinforcement, folding shift and brake lever, center stand, high screen, radiator guard, saddle bag frames (H-trails). Seems fairly well set up for adventure touring already! I paid $1650 in MN

Hi Dan The grade markings on the bolt are ISO standards (these grades go from 4.6 - 14.9) and 8.8 has a tensile strength of 80 kgf/mm^2 (113787 PSI) which is I think more than sufficient for the purpose that you are using, as long as you torque the bolt to the specified settings so that the preload is greater than the shear load. I would advise not to use S.S. fasteners on any load bearing attachments (especially brakes) as S.S. generally has a lower shear strength than carbon steel. Hope this helps. Aw Ra Best Mark

Excellent post, thanks! I've been using the Maxima Chain Wax, so at least I wasn't down at #20 or something, but it's good to know where things stand. I've forwarded the list from your two posts to all my "chain-driven friends." Mark St.Hilaire, Sr msaint@...
