new owner, starter power question

I am a new owner of a 93 KLR and am loving the decision. I am
going over the bike with a fine tooth comb to find problems and
things that the previous owner may have neglected. One of the
things I have a question about is the power of the starter motor.
On other bikes I have had, the starter motor is powerful enough
to spin the motor over rapidly before it starts. My KLR on the other
hand, does not spin the motor fast, but rather surges and seems
to stall at top dead center as the starter tries to force through the
piston compression. The bike always starts fine even without the
choke, and never has to go more than one or two engine
revolutions, but I am worried that if I ever have to stay on the
starter for a long time it won't be up to the task. Is this typical of
KLR starter power, or do I have something wrong? BTW, I have a
new battery with lots of amps.
one more thing, do you have to remove the gas tank to remove
the spark plug?

You should check the valve clearance and make sure the "KACR"
compression release is operating right. It holds one of the valves
open (right exhaust valve) a very small amount below about 300 rpm,
if it's not opening slightly you will have a much larger drain on the
battery when starting.

Taking off the forks is how it is done. It's not all that hard
really.
