I had to make a quick trip to Denver and back on Wednesday and
Thursday and saw two great candidates for the Darwin awards.
On the way to Denver, just north of Colorado Springs, we (my wife and
I in our Subaru) drove into a pretty fierce thunderstorm. We passed a
guy on a loaded down Harley (no helmet but had sunglasses, jeans and
jacket) shielding his eyes with his left hand and cruising along at
about 70mph in driving rain and traffic. We had just passed a couple
of freeway overpasses, so no excuses there. He was a bonafide idiot.
On the way back, just south of Trinidad, again another wild
thunderstorm, heavy driving rain which forced us to slow to about
65mph, semi-trucks on the road kicking up all kinds of spray and a BMW
oilhead RT almost runs into the semi we are passing then squirts
between us and the truck and disappears into the mist and rain.
Is getting there quickly that important?

My candidates for the Darwin award goes to the grandpa & grandma I saw
a couple of days ago driving a Chrysler minivan.
Grandpa is driving and Grandma has a little boy about 3 or 4 years old
sitting on her lap. The seat belt is around the little boy.
DAMN!!! If something happened, that kid gets squashed flat between
grandma and the air bag.
Evertime I think I have seen everything, another idiot comes along to
prove me wrong.

It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so
ingenious.

Hi Gino,
You know, many people would call us all idiots for even riding
these "murdercycles" and all of us prime candidates for the Darwin
Award.
My general take on things is: if you are not hurting others it's
OK. Thus the Harley guy was cool, but the Beemer guy who cut you off
was questionable...but then again he did not hurt you.
Steve - who loves to ride in rain if his face shield is not fogged.

Steve - that is a position that is pretty easy to take in principal but very
hard to live out in reality.
Just out of curiosity, how do you define "not hurting others"? An
oft-cited example is insurance rates. Riders without helmets are more
seriously injured in accidents, thus causing more medical bills and in turn
higher insurance rates. This is then used to say that riders without
helmets ARE hurting me everytime I pay an insurance premium. I don't
necessarily like that example but it is true.
Not intended to troll but probably am...

A couple of weeks ago I passed a BMW (car) on the Hwy 401 in Toronto. The
driver was doing about 140 kph. (about 87mph) while eating Chinese food.....
from a takeout container.....using chopsticks.....steering with his knees.
At least he wasn't using his cellphone/laptop/fax at the same time.
