no windshield...what a difference!

This morning, before my ride to work, I decided to take off that
foolish after-thought of a stock windshield to see if there is a
difference in the buffeting I hear, more than feel.
What a difference!!! Without the windshield, the air hits me just
below my full-faced helmet and feels and sounds so much "cleaner".
I'm thinking of taking out the Dremel tool and shaving off a shit-
load of the windshield, purely for looks....
Anyone else done this? No windshield, or a shortend version?

Joe,
I ride an 86 600 and it didn't have a windshield, just a number plate
and I love it. Had an opportunity to ride a y2k the othe r day with
the stock sreen and man what a diff that made. Now I understand why
everyone says they use ear plugs when riding. The noise from the
wind was deafening. So, i agree, cut that waste of plastic off!

My A2 had an AGV helmet visor that I mounted as a windshield until I
did the A-Team look with Krok's headlight guard. It looked and worked
great. On my A3, I used the AGV visor as a template and trimmed the
stock shield with a Dremel tool. I then put some edging on the top.
looks and works great too.

I also removed my w/s last weekend in a fit of rage over the noise and heat
(over 90 degrees on the shores of Lake Superior). I enjoy the increased
cooling and reduced noise. I'm considering getting a tall w/s for the cold.
Any suggestions for a 6'4" person?

Yes, I've tried it. Without the stock winshield you will probably be
able to drive longer distances. Simply for the fact of the wind not
blowing your head around.
With a Rifle windshield, Im guessing you could go even further in
more comfort.

I agree that one of the best modifications you can make on a KLR650 is to
remove the windshield, or if you prefer, replace it with a much taller one
that sends the buffting wind over your head.
You can get a real taste for the difference simply by standing up at about
50MPH to get your face out of the buffeting.
I dislike windshields anyway, I'm a dirt rider.

No windshield for the last 8k miles or so. I've never tried an
aftermarket tall shield but I might look into one when winter comes.

This is so wierd! I just took off my tall Clearview screen because of
the buffetting I was getting - am running now with the stock shield but
thought I might try it without any shield. I had this problem with my
97 R1100R BMW - no after-market windshield worked on that bike - always
had turbulance and buffeting - so I finally ended up riding it with no
screen at all and found that it was much better to sit up in 'clean
air'. I thought about this on my trip to Redmond this year - riding
down the road at 60/65mph I would occasionaly stand up on the pegs and
it just got totally quiet - and I thought 'this would be great if I
could get this all the time' - well, off goes the stock shield - I'll
report later how it works for me. Anybody want to buy a slightly used
National Cycle tall screen - it's the Kawasaki optional tall screen. If
interested, post me directly. Oh! By-the-way the Rife shield is pretty
'shitty' looking - I was going to get one but saw one on a bike at the
BMW MOA rally and thought different after I saw it - yuk! But that's my
opinion and it may work well for others - I have had other Rifle
products in the past and thought they were great - the KLR shield by
them just doesn't do it for me.

I just ordered a 7" (higher than stock) Clearview: now all this talk of removing the windshield altogether! I'm 6' and ordered the taller screen to keep most of the wind and rain off my body on road trips. Still want to see over the screen, not through it. Hopefully I won't get more buffering than I already do!!

I've had the Clearview +7 on for several months, and used it on long trip
thru Mexico & Central America. Only had the stock one for comparison, but
the +7 worked well for me(also 6'1").--PHW
