Hi List: Listening to a guy play the guitar and harmonica and sing in a garage converted to hangout/kitchen/TV room/laundry/bathroom and shower attached to the log cabin with rooms at the North Woods Lodge/Hostel/Campgrounds in Fairbanks, AK. Has public phone and free internet via webtv. Nice vibes. A campfire outside struggling to burn in a sunshiny light rain. Sixty indians from south of Tok were camping (tents, not tepees) here when I arrived yesterday. It was a bit crowded, but they departed today and all is tranquil again. Hosed off the incredible filth accumulated during the Deadhorse run on the Dalton Highway. Will install the new Dunlop Trail Max D-604 radial front tire and tube tomorrow. Bought new steel sprockets from the local Kawi shop. Looking for a DID Gold X-ring chain to go with the sprockets. Critter now has 16,574 miles on the clock. Signed up to the new and growing KLR forum at: www.advrider.com . Looking for Mariola to ride in, if she got my message left at three locations on the road riding down the Dalton to Fairbanks. She is only one day behind me. Looking forward to rubbing noses, Eskimoe style, with her. I read some messages on the list indicating some of you were initially skeptical and are surprised and respectful of my making this tour happen, as I said I would. Thanks for the kind words. Fireball had it right, when he met Punky and I and reported that we'd probably succeed. Fireball, where are you? Riding and aware of the trees and scenery whizzing by at 80 mph, I hope. I have come to enjoy the adventurous feeling of, not just riding from one place to another, but twisting the throttle a bit more than a more prudent rider would. It sure makes it more fun with a little risky riding and Critter has been up to it. The adrenalin high is exhilerating. Another shity day in paradise. Wonder what the rich folks are doing? Went to town today and rode Critter back with a tire and a load of groceries on top of the tail box. A really topheavy adventurous ride back to the lodge. Hope you guys enjoy reading this as much as I enjoy doing it. Ha ha. Bye for now, until next time.

Hi Fireball and friends: I don't have any more recent news about Mariola either. She apparently didn't get the messages I left for her along the Dalton and at the Kawi shop. She should have been back in Fairbanks from the Dalton a couple of days ago. You may not have seen my post last night about Punky's struggle for life, again, after an attack by the owner of the North Woods Lodge's 135 lb. Malmute. I have yet to ask him to help pay the vet bill. Surprisingly, he hasn't volunteered, so I assume he is uninsured for such liability. Fireball, I'm going to ask you for a big favor. Can you come up with ideas and compose letters or something for possible sponsorship by a dog food company, a veterinary organization or something like that. The last incident cost $2000 and this one is estimated to be $1000. I just spoke to one of the vets on the phone and she said Punky is doing as well as can be expected and will probably be released to my care in about 4 days. Considering the severity of his wounds, I am amazed at that. A surgical team of 3 vets performed surgery, suturing 5 layers of flesh that were opened exposing his lung and heart. He's still not out of the woods for about another 24 hours, during which time he could develop infection or other complications. However, the vets are optimistic for his recovery. No broken bones. Punky ALMOST hurt the Malmute, considering that Bear almost ate him and could have choked on his bones. I was sitting on the bike and had just started it to go to town and buy smokes. Punky was standing on the tank bag with his leash attached around my neck. Bear's chain allowed him get to the bike. As he approached I sensed his intention and starte to lift Punky away from his reach, but not far enough for the huge Malmute to leaped up and got Punky's left side/chest in his jaws. I dropped the bike as Bear drug Punky away with such force that Punky's harness and leash, tethered to my neck, came off his body. I asked the vet on the phone to please help with ideas for sponsorship. She said she would get in touch with their dog food rep. I know you are a busy guy, but I would appreciate anything you can come up with to assist in this matter. Poor Punky is the victim of my folly. Although, neither incident was actually related to riding the bike. Punky is just faithfully following his master, whereever he goes. I will update you all as things develop. Later. Lew,
I'll see what I can dig up for sponsorship - maybe IVD or
one of the other dog food people will do something. I just
got back in town and will call them AM Monday.
If you're looking for unsolicited suggestions , I'm
assuming you are going to pull through this with Punky and
will make it work any way that you can, and regardless of
sponsorship. I talked with my sister-in-law who is a vet
in Ashland, Oregon, when you are near there give her a call
and she'll do a once-over on you and the dog before you go
further south. No charge to you - if there are any lab or
other charges she'll send them to me. Her name is Anette
Heaslet, DVM, Lithia Springs Veterinary, phone 541.482.6636.
As far as the owner of the lodge, and his dog, his property
liability insurance will probably cover the charges. If he
has a loan on the place, he should have insurance. You
should insist on performance, combined with a visit to the
local paper. A local insurance agent would get good press
if he helps you. The owner has to cover the deductible, and
small claims court would support it and any claim for
inconvenience up to $5k. $35 is the likely filing fee if he
doesn't respond. Go to the local paper in person first,
though.
Hang in there. Will follow up on the dog food
conversations. I won't be in the office much over the next
couple of weeks since I'm hiding out on a project, so email
is best.
Fireball
P.S. The chain/sprockets should last at least 12-14k miles.
Are you lubing it every day?

Stuart,
Perhaps the list can set up some kind of fund for Punky. I for one would be
glad to help out with whatever I can. With as many listers as we have, just
a couple of bucks from each of us would add up to a sizable sum in short
order. I don't have a clue how to go about setting up something like this,
and the other obstacle might be how to get the funds to Lew. Perhaps
someone on the list has had experience with fundraisers, etc... Just a
thought.

Hi everybody,
I got in touch with Lew earlier today, inquiring about how to send funds. It
cost too much to send Western Union. But Lew said he will be staying where
he's at for a while. So, I'm sending him a check in the morning.
I will double check the address, and post it for those of you that can help
Punky & Lew out.
If everybody could send a little, it will help alot.
Later,

Lew, don't beat yourself up over this. You tried your best. In both cases
the unpredictability of animals was the root cause. That Bear sounds like
one mean watch dog. I center-punched a cat riding home the other night. No
way to avoid it without going sideways and laying the bike over at 70 mph.
Life is full of the unpredictable. You just got to keep moving forward.
