Can some of you that have changed to aftermarket bars give me an idea
of what to use or not to use? I've seen the aluminum bars on Dual
Star's web page. What about those? I'm looking for one close to the
original dimensions, but stronger.
Also, has everyone had good experiences dealing with Dual Star? The
only reason I ask is because I've emailed them twice about 3 weeks ago
to request more information about some of there products before place my
order, and I still haven't received a response from them.
Thanks in advance.

I like the ole Moose Carbon Bars. They're just carbon steel and $15.
They're not a strong as say $100 Renthals, but I'll destroy a set of
Renthals before destroying 6 or 7 Moose bars,

Henry:
I am using Renthal bars
http://renthal.com and any very happy with
their quality. Renthal makes about 50 or more handlebars just for
Motocross/Enduro applications, so you should be able to find a bend
that is similar to the stock bars.
If you look around you can find some pretty good prices. For example
at Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse
http://www.accwhse.com most of the
Renthal bars are in the 59 to 65 dollar range.
Also check out the handlebar comparison at the Dual Sport News
website: dualsportnews.com
YMMV,

I put on a Renthal a while back and have been very happy with it. I
got the Desert size, cause I wanted a little more width (about an
inch, I think). It's solid and strong, and I think it looks much
better (brushed silver finish) than stock. It was about $85 from
Fred. I filled mine with a tube of silicone caulk and put on gel
grips and it's helped reduce the vibrations a lot.
I did have to drill a pilot hole in the bar to get the left grip
assembly on, but some guys just grind the alignment peg off (there's
a peg inside the front housing on the left assembly that fits in a
hole in the stock bar). Start attaching the right grip and cable
assemblies first.

What a timely post! I just got the word that my KLR had been hit in the
parking garage and upon inspection, it appears that I will need some new
grips and bars. One question about the Moose bars, what is the bend like? I
like the bend and width of the stock bars, but would be interested in
something a tad bit taller. Any thoughts?

Man...I hate it when that happens (read my post about a month ago).
Anyway, the Moose bar is similar to stock (same bend but about an
inch narrower). I've seen it in the same rise and a 2" lower rise. I
like the lower bars.
They come with a free crossbar pad too!

Moose is a company that makes many different products for off road and dual sport bikes. Moose makes several types of handlebars, from the el cheapo steel bars to aluminum bars and the bulge type like Answer Pro Tapers. Most all of the bends that Moose makes are for dirt bikes and especially for MX type bikes. The closest bend to the KLR would be the KX bend but this bar is still much lower, flatter and has less pull-back than the KLR. The Renthal Desert Vintage or XR bend has more pull-back and is higher than the MX type bars.

Rumor has it that Renthal discontinued the Vintage Deserts.
Is this true? I have a set on now and love the sh** out of
them. I know K&N quit making bars, I used to have the ISDE
steel bars, liked them also, but got the Renthals after not
finding the K&Ns.

Renthal did have a fire last year that burned up some of their production facilities in England but I haven't heard that the Desert Vintage bend handlebars are not available. I have ordered and received these bars recently.
