This ought'a generate some responses... OK everybody, what octane rated gas do you put in your KLR? I don't mean brand names, just the octane rating...87? 89? 92? Is the extra cost worth it? I've been using 87 octane, bike seems to run just fine, BUT I still have less than 1000 miles on the odometer, so the motor may not be all "settled" in yet... Comments? Suggestions? Gilbert p.s. I use 92 mostly, but only because the XRs I ride with need it (tanker). The lower octane produces more power as it has a lower flash point (burns quicker). That's what causes pinging. I have never experienced any knocking or pinging from running 87. The bike did run like shit on Pemex gas, though - must have been la agua en la nova sin. Lance A14 in Tucson

I use 87 in the winter time. and 89 in the summer. My opinion is that the 89 in the summer will make the engine run a little cooler and 87 in the winter will let the engine run a little warmer. I don't think 92 is needed unless your driving through death valley in July.

I used to run ethel in everything i rode and drove, But now that gas is up . I would think you would run lower octane during the summer. Reason is that I run 102 octane Trick gas in my GTi during track days and it runs much hotter. Lower the octane and it runs cooler. But during the summer you the motor is running hotter because of outside temps. Hello All I would disagree. As an engine's temperature rises, it will require more octane to avoid knocking (detonation), unless it has a knock sensor/timing retard. Once an engine starts knocking, the temp really starts to soar, causing more knocking, and on and on, boom. Summer would be the last time I would run low octane. As for the 102 octane being the cause of the hotter running engine, I don't know. Maybe you are just driving it harder! Generally speaking, if the engine is not knocking, you don't need more octane. I agree with Josh. The lower octane has a lower flash point which means it burns cooler. The octane is raised to slow down and smooth the burn for long duration cams. Lance

listers, i have sustained a compression fracture of lower back and at 68 ( with major HA) my off road riding days are over. I still have my street bikes!! I have a 2001 KLR. 3500 miles. proggressive suspension and front ss brake lines and EBC pads. ACERBIIS hand guards with the bolt-on protectors. bike has lowering links( lowered 1 1/2" ). runs bel ray oil and has "water wetter" in radiator. new stock dunlops (k-750). with new HD tubes. new super bike handgrips. A complete kawasaki shop (excellent!!!!!) service and the installation of most of above mentioned items was done on tuesday of this week. I also have a brand new black leather (black leather inserts) and blue/green welt, corbin seat. also bike has the shorter kickstand to fit its lowered condition. I am taking bike to dealer on sat. If any lister is interested call me before sat. I want $4000.00 for bike.
