hand made bash plate

Hi,
My father in law is a Stainless Steel worker. He can build anything. So, I ordered him a stainless steel bash plate. It's going to look like the Happy trail one since that's the only decent picture of a KLR bash plate available on the web. But I was wondering if anyone had any pictures or measurements of the bash plate? Also, I don't have a clue on how that thing is fixed underneath the bike. So that's the kind of info that would be very usefull...well, actually, any kind of info would be appreciated to build a real good bash plate!

When I was entertaining the same idea (make my own S.S. or alum skid plate)
I almost took advantage of recent offers on this list for free stock plastic
"take-offs" to flatten out and use as a pattern. I'm sure there are still
some out there for the asking (and shipping cost).
BTW, decided I'd rather buy Happy Trails bolt-on and go riding instead of
spending time in shop. Guess that means there will be another plastic
take-off available in a few weeks.

Hanging off a KLR doesn't give me any confidence at all.
Certainly the KLR wasn't strictly designed for the kinds of side
loads you will get when hanging off in a turn, a 21 inch spoked
wheel isn't a terribly rigid design.
I get the best feel just by sitting in the seat and letting the
suspension handle it. Lucky for me the KLR600 has plenty of clearance,
I don't need to hang off.

Not in my experience.
It depends a lot on how gradually the tyres slide as well.
I only changed to road tyres because I ran out of tread on the sides
of the front Avon Gripster.
Any decent tyre will give you a gradual release/recovery despite
the chassis.

Well, i live in Canada, so, for the Happy Trail bash plate with Highway
pegs, 69$ US would cost me 110$ CAN, + Damn Costy Shipping, + Taxes or
customs, + God knows what... And buying another bash plate would cost about
the same thing...so better do it myself!
So, I'm asking, anybody has a spare plastic take-off?
