I just put a whopping 88 miles on my A7 after getting it back from a
shop for some shall we say "top end repairs." While going up hill in
4th gear, the engine died and the back wheel locked up. I pulled in the
clutch and made it to the shoulder and assessed the situation. The
starter (relay) just clicked away, so I decided to bump start it down
hill in the bike lane. The first try at ended in a skid. The second
ended when the local PD saw me going down hill the wrong way in the bike
lane. The third was also unsuccessful. The headlight dims more than
normal with the starter engaged and all of the fuses are fine. Any
ideas? Thanks.

The fact that it locked up would make it appear you have a severe problem in the
engine drive train. In that case, the starter would dim the lights because it is
trying to rotate an engine that is essentially locked.
I would take it back to the shop and have them inspect it. Hopefully your problems are
unrelated and you just have a bad battery but it doesn't sound like it.

Ouch... it looks to me like something is physically interfering with
engine rotation; like something broke or got disconnected (or the
mechanic's wedding band, watch, etc that got dropped into the engine)
and is now trapped in the cogs of a gear.

Hi Adam! *smile*
Hi Everybody! *smile*
Adam, lots of our viewers have had problems like this.....it's
nothing to be ashamed of, it's actually quite common. *smile*
I just finished lubing Regis' chain, and he's all pooped out *poor
dear* but he is going to help out here. He says that you should
check and see if the engine will turn. He says you need to take out
that big spark plug thing *smile* and then put the bike on a stand,
or put it in neutral with the little round cover on the left hand
side, right there in the center of the crankcase *smile*. Can you
turn it with one of those big 19mm wrenches? If you can, that's
probably good *smile*. That means the motor turns over! If you
can't, it might be something stuck inside that big motor! *what,
Regis honey?* Oh, if it does turn over, now you should check the
battery for voltage! Let us know how it turns out, and don't feel
too bad, it happens to everyone at some time in their life. *smile*
Next time we see all you fine people, we will discuss something no
one's wanted to talk about in public........
.......rectal myopia *smile*

Hey bro, mine was doin that to much one day. I found it fianly it
was the lisense plate, stuck up inside the wheel. Should checkc it.
I think the lisense plates arent put on there quite right.

Man, it was cold riding home from work this morning on 50. And we
had two truck drivers come in about 3, wore out four of the ladies
and drank up most of the good wisky. I had to sweep up and mop down
before headin home. Im beat.

If the engine locks up do not try to start it by turning the rear wheel, it may bend the connecting rod or damage the valve train.

Adam, I would check the water level of your battery, the terminal
connections and the charge. From your description, it may be that you
lugged-it up the hill in 4th and killed-it and then there wasn't enough
juice going to the starter to turn-it over. I havn't had the pleasure
of bump starting mine yet, but I've heard others say its not easy. I
liked somebody's idea of slamming your butt down on the rear of the seat
at the moment of clutch release (to get it started ; - )
BTW, when it comes to fuses, don't rely on visual inspection alone, if
other factors have been eliminated, change the fuse(s) and see what
happens. But since the solenoid clicked, it sounds like possibly a
(small) amount of juice was getting there and the fuse is good.
