do we really need a valve adjustment?

I got 6000+ miles on my 2001 in about 3 months. It runs like a Swiss watch.
I have read mucho about valve adjustments. I dont plan on adjusting mine any
time soon and question the validity of the claims stating the need to do it
at all on the mighty KLR. I guess I will CONTINUE to run my WELL-CARED for
pup without valve adjustments and keep you all notified.... I am not really
convinced that ANY valve adjustment is needed at all.

I'm pretty much of a mind to say suit yourself...but your reasoning is flawed...the
archives have hundreds of records of people whose valves had tightened way beyond
specs at 500, 1000, 1500, 3000 miles...so the evidence is overwhelmingly present. No
need to respond...ignorance is bliss...

Hey, OJ, give us a post when you want to know how to pull off the
head.................it's a piece of cake, no need to fool with the
valves now.....much easier later. In fact it will probably be easier
to just get a complete head and put it on, you won't have to unmelt
those valves either.

OJ, just for the record, I put mine off until 5500 miles and found one of
the exhasut valves at .0015 when it should've been between .006 and
.010....Do what you will but engine failure due to negligence is a sure-fire
way to ruin a good day. The bike will also run a lot better if everything is
in spec. Mine improved dramatically on the low end.

Well then I guess your WELL-CARED pup is not well-cared. It might be
running fine now but it is SOOOOO easy to just check it to make sure. If it
is out of whack and you don't do something now. You will be paying a very
steep bill for neglect and Kawa probably won't pay for it since you failed
to follow warrenty recomendations.
Just food for thought.

Hmmmm.... I've heard of more down time on bikes because owners have
dropped parts into their engines, stripped cover bolts and other
fiasco's during valve adjustment attempts than KLR's being down
because of fried valves.

I'm kinda with you here. My '01 is 5 weeks old w/ 3400 mi. I was a
little concerned with what the wrench head a the dealership
said; "just ride it, change the oil every once in a while, it'll be
fine". Obviously, I'm concerened with regular maintainence, but this
guy IS a factory trained Kawi tech, and he says the things are meant
to hold up to all kinds of abuse/neglect.
I'll check the valves if they get noisy, and the balancer chain
tension, if It vibrates too much. other than, I'm not going to "look"
for any problems.

you might be fine, you might not. for me, the bottom line is that working on
your bike is good for you. i have a lot of confidence that my bike won't
crap out in the middle of nowhere, and if it gives me trouble, i'll be able
to figure out how to fix it. that peace of mind is worth alot to me since i
get off the beaten path a bit, and i don't feel like wallking back.
i learned this in a 15 year career of racing bicycles, mostly off-road. i've
only once had to drop out of a race once due to mechanical failure.

It's when they get too quiet that you're going to realize you should
have checked 'em and Mark Weaver put it correctly about knowing your
machine.
Where is the real benefit to being lazy? Inquiring minds want to
know.
