Please don't take this the wrong way. I have been a Systems Programmer/Administrator for almost 20 years and spam is nothing new. Its been going on way before the Internet as we know it now. I used to deal with it a lot way back in the Eighties (remember BitNet anyone?). What puzzles me is how enraged people get about spam now. Sometimes I wonder if people get angry because it's fashionable. Somebody sees what they think is a computer pro getting angry about spam so they get angry when they're really not angry. They want people to think they're cool because they get angry about spam. There is this little known secret in the IT community. Its called DELETE. Its really cool. You just delete a piece of mail you don't want to read.     I'm more concerned about people "protecting me" from spam than people spamming me. Think about it. This is a First Amendment issue. I'd rather choose for myself weather or not I want to read a piece of mail. Now I know that the intentions of the list management is sincere and I'm not asking you to NOT block spam. I just think people need to think more about the issues. Its very simple to delete. You can't delete something that's not there. I couldn't agree more. Censorship is one of the most insidious forms of mind
control that exists, you don't even know it's happening. TV sets, radios etc
have switches to turn them off and knobs to change the stations, we do not
need anyone controlling what we see or listen to. Arne you do a great job,
this is by far the most informative list I belong to, but spam really is a
 pretty limited problem, I think I've seen 3 or 4 in the 5 months I've been a
subscriber. Just my 2 cents but I feel better for geting it said.

Right on, and I just want to also make clear that Arne is a great guy who
does a great job managing a great list. Its people like Arne who volunteer
their precious time to keep this great list running PERFECTLY who deserve a
round of applause. Well done Arne & whoever else helps out with managing
this list. Thanks. Sometimes I go off on a rant, but I'm learning to contain
 it.

Dear People Bothered by my report of Spam,

I guess it's nice that some of you have had vast experience with Spam on
e-mail systems. As a novice in the e-mail groups, it seemed appropriate to
let the system administrator know when I receive unrelated and unwanted
 messages.

As for the First Amendment comment, please give me a major break!!! I hope
those of you who subscribe to that position are called every night at
dinnertime and bedtime by a telemarketer for something you don't want.

 Jim

Completely different context, completely different situation. But you knew
that, didn't you ? It's the difference between someone barging into your
home, or knocking on the door.

The first guy lost his own Email address after I got done with him.  I've now reported this one to Egroups.  The  problem with manually approving new members is that once approved, what's to stop them from doing what these last two have done?  Nothing unfortunately...   Cheers,   Arne [quote] -----Original Message-----

Good question... I don't know either. The list is pretty big so I guess
it's an attractive target. If we report all occurrences to Egroups (they
have an anti-spam link at the bottom of their main page) let's hope thay can
 deal with this stuff.
