[dsn_klr650] nklr - horsepower klr250? and dyno 650

Post by BCSavWill@cs.com » Mon Aug 14, 2000 12:56 pm

HI, The Kawasaki supplement quotes: KLR 250 D5 28PS@9000 rpm and 16.5 ft-lbs torque @ 8000 rpm but Ca maodels are not quoted. D7 models and later quote 23 PS again CA models not quoted. Maybe some more knowling folks here might know better. It's the same for the 650 not quoting CA power, but other models quoted at 48PS. Mostly they seem to show around 32 to 35 PS at the wheel, which would, I believe, be a rather large drive train loss. The reasons I don't know. Maybe others can shed light. Just dyno'd my A14 at 32 DIN stock and 38 with Big Gun and Dyno Jet. These are peak readings. The power now comes in a lot earlier and the increased torque is very noticable, (seat of the pants). I did see around 8 bhp peak, average 6.5bhp gain in the 3500 to 4500 range and the engine is far more tractable and pulls from idle in 1st, 2nd, 3rd cleanly with the torque just THERE, twist and go, very quickly over stock (seat of the pants). I think dyno, horse power numbers are relative. Twist it, if its what you want and how you want it great, if you NEED or can USE more, I am sure it can be done. Again my dyno run was at 90 degs and 29.94 in, perhaps they should all be corrected to a standard temp for comparison sake. Sometimes I think I need stronger biceps to hang onto all the torque I have. It accelerates to 60mph in, I think, a little under 4 secs! and no rim locks too. Regards, Brian A14 D17

Hi Brian, Your peak readings with the Big Gun and jets seem to be about what I got with my IDS-2 Quiet and jets. Do you plan to post your dyno run graphs to the group? I would love to compare them to mine. Jim

Hi Jim No I have not seen your postings but would like to. Will try and scan and send both ways. Thanks. PS are there archives on pistons, cams, hubs? Also I have tinkered with bikes for at least 40 years and used to build and race rally cars and have quite a bit of knowledge there on dual cam four valve cylinders. Used to get very torquey usable power at about 54 (at wheel) hp from 500cc per cylinder using, among a few other things, 45/48 mm carbs (one choke per cylinder). Peak HP used to be around 7000. OK I know these were 4cyl engines but they must breath the same

Post by BCSavWill@cs.com » Wed Aug 16, 2000 6:53 pm

Hi all, I am looking to build another set of wheels. Does anyone know of any hubs for sale or where they might be obtained other than Kawasaki. Regards Brian A14
