nklr I have been using an e-trex for a couple of months, I'm impressed with it over older (lower tech.) models I've owned. The key, I'm told, is it can track multiple sat's at once. ( This is different than "parallel" spec. that is often quoted.) The unit is fast to acquire and once tracking you can't shake it on the trail. Features: compass, speed, elevation, adv. speed,top speed, heading, bearing.... trips and multi stage legs. Pluses: cheap ($119.00us) bat. life, small, simple Minus: no map overlay, adapter required for ant. or 12v. bdog@...

I have been looking at the etrex and find it quite attractive. It is a good hundred dollars cheaper than the emap, smaller and water resistant-the emap isn't. I was planning on using it on the bike along with good maps and a conventional compass. It can be connected to a lap top or PDA for use in the car complete with maps and speech depending how your computer is equipped and the software you are running. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa no GPS yet

I thought all GPS units tracked multiple satellites... I didn't go too far in school with math, but I thought GPS used a "trigonometric" (is that a word?) process to calculate lat, long, speed, heading and the like. Chris Astier

I just started using my eTrex, I have been using it in the car as we travel about, not on the bike yet though. I can t say how the vibration would affect it. I find it really easy to use, it is very accurate in measuring speed and distance (aligns with the speedo in the car). It "locates" me in about 10 seconds from system on. I think the map function would not really be flexible, as many maps would be required to be dynamic... Just a thought. I expect to use the eTrex with a map and compass anyway. --- Rev. eTrex does *about* the same without map display for about 1/2 the price and is water proof to 1 meter for 30 minutes. I guess it will take the rain ok. eTrex has 500 waypoints, backtrack, 22 hour battery life, upgrade-able software from Garmin, 12 channel parallel tracking, altitude (via 4th satellite, not pressure like the eTrex Summit). But whatever you choose, remember you do not get the best functionality if you buy the lowest cost in the line, nor do you get the best for the highest cost. Yes they do. Older ones can 'listen' to one at a time, one per second. Newer models (parallel) listen to up to 12 satellites simultaneously. Garmins, for example have a 386 chip inside to process all this information.

All the satellites in the GPS constellation are broadcasting "atomic time" (very, very accurate). The GPS then compares the various times it receives. Some satellites are farther than others, due to the speed of the radio transmission, the time it takes for the radio signal to arrive from the satellite varies in direct relation to the distance. The GPS uses its "state of the art" 386 chip to calculate (using trigonometry, no doubt) your position. Simple, huh? And last May the gov'ment gave us one more digit! Not the finger. One more digit increased the accuracy of normal GPSs to about 25 feet (ten times down from 250 feet). They were fun before. Now they rock! I'm just a user (not an expert) but I have read the older 12 sat parallel units only followed 4 sats at one time... but they could do a total of twelve.... ( back and forth ) The e-trex (and others I'm sure) now will do 12 together ... I just know the newer units are far superior.. I stuff mine in the map pocket of the tank bag and it works perfect! : -) bdog@...

I got my new helmet today. It's the top of the line ARAI RX-7RR4 full face in white. I got it from a place on the internet called "The Helmet Shop" They are located in Daytona Florida. They were the cheapest I could find. About $100.00 less then anyone else. I paid $428.00 plus $8.00 shipping. It took about 5 working days to get to California. If your looking for a good price on a helmet, check them out. The 12 channel parallel receivers could always track 12 if there were 12 'visible' (but there never are). You need a minimum of four to initialize, and can get by with three after that but four is the more optimum minimun qty. Three spread out as far as possible is best. Tom
