Subject: Re: (NKLR?) hand signals
"Left arm to the left (straight out) means left turn.
Left arm bent up (shoulder to elbow straight out, elbow to fingers facing
up) means right turn.
Left arm bent down (shoulder to elbow straight out, elbow to fingers facing
down) means stop."
That's corrrect. Hand signals were developed in this country for automobiles
before the advent of electric trun signals. The driver could only stick his
left arm out the window to signal (unless he was long-armed and
double-jointed) and therefore the left arm is the correct arm with which to
signal. My first bikes and my first four-wheeled vehicle (a 1949 Ford F-100)
did not have signals and I got used to hand signals. CAUTION: Modern drivers
often do not understand what the signals mean.
Pete, signaling before Streaking

Well, I'm glad that the person who was conducting my road test today was as much of a moron as I was.
My examiner, standing in the parking lot wearing his bright orange "Don't Hit Me" vest told me that a right turn was signalled with the right arm straight to the elbow, and bent skywards after. A left turn was to be signalled by a RIGHT arm straight out. Braking was also signalled with the right arm, straight out to the elbow and then pointed down.
My problem was I was signalling with the wrong arm. Too many years of mountain biking has me pointing in the direction I'm going to go. Guess that doesn't work when you're riding 300lbs of metal. Thus, I was signalling a right hand turn with the arm straight out, and a left bent at the elbow with the hand up. The examiner told me I had it backwards, and that my left was my right, and my right was my left. He mentioned nothing about the fact that I was using the wrong arm.
What do I do about this? Is there someone I should be reporting to about this examiner, who knows his hand signals as well as I do? Or should I let it slide?
I'm going back for the second try at the test next week. All that I have to fix is the hand signals. Please, hold back your laughter at the silly kid that can't pass his road test....
