airbox and filter on the klr...improving?

Does anyone have plans on how to improve the stock air box on the KLR (mines a 1988 250cc)? I think mine tends to suffocate at high revs and air flow may be a contributing factor. Is there perhaps an after market air box? I could drill a few holes....but there is still the same area of foam filter the air has to pass through. Ideally I would increase the foam filter area. I appreciate any tips or ideas? Thanks, Chris.
