leaky waterpump - help

It's with a heavy heart that I write this. I noticed the other day that my KLR is dripping. I noticed this after putting on the MSR skidplate, it catches the drips. It seems to be leaking VERY slowly, a drip or 2 a day out of the little hole on the bottom of the waterpump. It does not appear to be an outer gasket, it seems to come out of the hole. What is this hole for (I've never asked that before!) and is this bad? With only 750Km on my new bike I would not expect this. Will it stop if I give it some time? Any opinions appreciated.
