nklr: possible relocation to bay area

For those in CA:
I'll be in the San Fransisco Bay area next week for a job interview.
Obviously I'll looking at relocating. I think I can bring my 49-state
2000 KLR with me, but is this really true? I've lived only in the
South so far, so all these emission laws, regulations and other stuff
are new to me.
What is the procedure to register the bike and what will it cost?
Also, any good trail riding in this area? If I do relocate, it would
be great to have someone to ride with.
