One more reply then I need to get to work... I found that if you give the dealer the part #'s they don't seem to have a problem ordering the bolts. I ordered about 5 different bolts last week and they said no problem...be here in about 5 days on order, no rxtra charge. Then again, I may have found the only rider friendly dealer in the US!!! Give Point Cycle a call in Pittsburgh. The stock bolts on the KLR are very expensive, but at least you'll get a discount through them. I got a whole bunch for my kit. They had most of them in stock. I don't work for Point Cycle, but I am on a first name basis as my Franklins are very popular over there. Although now they are obsolete for my bike. I went to my local bolt supplier and bought a bunch of 6x1x? bolts in stainless. They aren't flanged bolts like those on the KLR but buy a bag of washers with them. I got 10mm, 16mm, 20mm and 25mm lengths. I'm replacing all the standard bolts with these. I'm even taking off the awful philips head screws and replacing them with these. You can get the flanged ones but they generally aren't in stock. You can order them from a place like Bolts4You. 800-559-7884 Ask for Brad and tell him that Dash sent ya. I don't work for them, I just send them gobs of money for my business fastener needs. Have a list ready and keep in mind that buying a box of 100 will most likely be cheaper than buying them by the handful. I'd eventaully like to replace all the bolts with stainless ones but some bolts are hardened and the strength is required there. I also don't have the patience to measure every single bolt. Although I probably should while they are all in a big bucket right now. If everyone sends me one beer then perhaps I'll make a list and publish it here, if every one sends me two beers and your word that you'll buy them, I'll order them in the thousands and make up KLR Bolt replacement kits. A complete kit that is cheaper for all and I get a couple of months worth of beer. Fair trade... Oh yeah, Milwaulkees Best is not beer. My favorites are Fat Tire, Sunshine Wheat, Shiner Bock and the old Killians Red (if you can find a case of the old Killians Red, I'll give you a kit). Coors is good for watering plants and Budwieser isn't even worthy of my toilet bowl. I am not hoping to start a beer debate nor offend any of you but after burning my taste buds off with hot chile since moving to New Mexico, my new delicate buds are soothed only by good beer. I'm certainly open to trying any of your favorite beers. I got to try Uff Da (sp?) last year. A2 - Da' Bomb No Longer Crashing for Beer Will wheelie for Virgin Oil

Tumu, So far, my local ace hardware has been able to supply most all the metric fasteners for all my motorcycles that I've needed. In some larger cities you can find engine suppliers that will sell "onesy twosy" odd ball (big?) fasteners. Even though the *standard* fasteners I find at the Ace hardware aren't always exactly the same "head" as what came out of the bike, I figure, I might as well just use the *standard* fasteners, as I know I won't need any funny tools. I think Kawasaki puts smaller heads than *standard* on a few of the fasteners to help people not overtorque. If I ent up needing something that was absolutely specific to the bike, i.e. swingarm bolts, axles, etc. I usually wind up getting those at the cycle salvage. I can't remember the last time I bought a fastener from a dealer, although I know I bought quite a few early on in my motorcycling history, and just got tired of dealing with them when *standard* metric fasteners seem to work just fine for me! BTW, just as a matter of interest, my recollection of the Machinists' Handbook defines the difference between a bolt and screw as a bolt threads into a nut, and a screw threads into "the material". In other words, sometimes the difference is not in the fastener itself, but how it is used!! For those that disagree, go ahead, just please don't yell at me, or call me names. Bravo Steve.... The great screw debate... You are absolutely correct.... it depends on the application and not the hardware. The KLR has many nuts welded in place... is it a screw or is it a bolt? BOLT! Just you all go ahead and try this one.. I've got my keyboard ready... I have been in many screw vs. bolt debates all over the net in the past few years. I bit the bullet and bought a whole heap of metric hex head fasteners in stainless with washers. Now every time I do any work on the bike, I replace all the old bolts with the new. Not at all cheap, I've probably spent $100+ on fasteners including spares, but each time you go to work on the bike, and the bolt slides effortlessly out, you thank yourself. I keep any stressed bolts in high grade steel. If you're in BC, Canada, Pacific Fasteners in Vancouver will do any quantity of stainless, and they've never been out of stock so far... Hmmmm...Since the heads on the valve cover bolts are larger than standard was that done so people (lots of them) WOULD.. overtorque?
