Like tires, what you need to buy depends on what type of riding you plan to do. Personally, I have a pair of Joe Rocket Revolution boots for road trips and some Alpine Star Tech 6's for when I am off-road or want extra protection. But I don't think that any two listers wear the same boots. If you have a preference towards the extra protection of an MX type boot, try the Fox Tracker, O'Neal Element, or Thor T-6. All three are about $100, light enough for some walking without the Robo Cop feel, and still offer good foot, ankle, and shin protection. Google "motorcycle" and "boots" and you'll get nearly as many hits as if you did a search for "porn". Lots of choices. -----Original Message----- From: Lecours, Jean-Francois To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Fri, 18 Mar 2005 13:44:13 -0500 Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Boots Hi all I do not post a lot but I read a lot... Oxtar Sport TCS. Not too big, waterproof, comfortable, durable, and have "Tortion control system" Which in a wreck prevents your foot and ankle from being bent far enough to break. I got a used pair on Ebay for $80 ($260 retail) --- "Lecours, Jean-Francois" wrote:

I don't have any, but the Sidi Discovery boots are supposed to be pretty good. Also check out newenough.com. They are great and have lots of nice stuff. Rick

Street/track, I wear a Gaerne boot, good protection, thin sole for control. Multisurface/long trips, I wear the Oxtar Infinity. Heavier, clunkier sole, waterproof, warmer than the Gaernes. too. Great protection without being completely restrictive (though too restrictive for sport riding, for me). Same boot as the BMW Savanna for less $$$$. Both were bought "on sale" at www.newenough.com -- and both are great boots. As someone else pointed out, D/S boots are like D/S bikes ... you have to choose which end of the compromise you want to wind up with. --John Kokola -----Original Message-----

Pros/cons, everything I need to know, go ahead. My choice for an all around boot for street, dirt, hiking, walking, working, is a pair of RedWing Irish Setters. Its basically a woods boot, 10" lace up tops with a tracker heel. Back when I worked with the USFS on fire crew we all wore the same boots as you found loggers wearing. Very stiff foot bed, with a steel shank, and very stiff ankle support. They were designed such that as long as you could get traction on the an edge of the sole, the bootwas stiff enough to give you the platform to swing a hand tool or run a chain saw. Once broken in they are a boot comfortable enough for a 1000 mile day. I have taken hits on rocks that were hard enough to twist the steel shank and my foot was undamaged so they do they job for DS type dirt riding. I like the style well enough that this summer I'm planning to have White Boots, the Aerostich of this style of work boot, make a pair custom fitted to my foot. It will cost about $500, but then White Boots are guaranteed rebuildable for the life of owner. Pat G'ville, NV [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I like Red Wings for riding as well, except I prefer the walking heel My White's have been rebuilt twice, and are still rolling, err walking. I should be due again in a year or two. kdxkawboy@... wrote:

I have been wearing Vasque Sundowners, gortex hiking boots, for years; I'm on my 4th pair. Allow you to ride than walk any distance, You'd want something with more protection for racing or hard core dirt but for dual sporting and adventure touring they're great. Made in Italy; you should be able to get them in Canada. About $200 US. Bogdan

Hey, those are my hiking boots! I bought them because they're available in a *narrow* width--one of the few boots that are so. Great boots; durable and pretty comfortable out of the box, but even better with a couple hundred miles of walking in them. -- Blake Sobiloff San Mateo, CA (USA)
