headlight guard
All of the clear headlight guards I have seen have some sort of a stand off but that still limits the amount of cooling air to the headlight.
These guards usually have a stick-on Velcro attachment method so you can remove the guard if you need to clean your headlight.

I have a screen over my 07 and it works fine. I was just thinkin about the clear plastic thing. Would it work it you mounted it on some kind of standoffs? You know like a space between the lamp and the protector. It may be the way they come idono.

What year is your KLR? I am not aware of any wire stone guards for the late model KLR, so I would guess that you have an early model KLR. I believe that the plastic guards could block the flow of air to cool your headlight and could cause heating problems with a higher wattage bulb. Ventura makes a good plastic guard for the late model KLRs. http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/images/ventura_lightguard.jpg Since the late model KLR headlight is much more expensive than the early model KLRs, I would suggest a Ventura guard. If you have an early model KLR, I would recommend the wire stone guards.

Trying to decide to which guard I want on the headlight. Clear plastic like my
Connie has or the bolt on screen. I'm leaning towards the screen not trusting
the glue on the Velcro tabs.

headlight guard
I have the heavy vinyl one sided adhesive headlight protector on a '02
headlight w/ 55 w bulb and have had no heating issues to date. Most riding
has been in less than desert temp weather. Don't actually know if it has
fended off any gravel strikes but I have been to Prudhoe, Inuvik and
Labrador on gravel hwys so it probably has come into play. One drawback with
the mesh guard is that cleaning the lens is likely more difficult because of
restricted access. Pack a bottle brush to get behind the guard, my headlight
got snotty quite often on the Haul Road as did I. The riders I know using
the velcro mounts have had no failures but it's a small sample.
Best regards,
Don M
