To all who replied- Thanks. I have been a bit under the wx and the thought process was clouded. clouded. After the suggestions, it made perfect sense to change the oil and then RETURN to OP temps again before cold storage. The 4 primary bikes: 3klrs with thermo bobs, one KLR pre-thermo bob (its on the bench) with newspaper pushed down behind the the radiator screen blocking to radiator to bring the temp gauge to the mid range with OAT at 38F. The non-thermo bob bike was not coming up to temp until I slipped the newspaper between the screen and the radiator--it then warmed up =195F almost as fast as a thermo bob equipped bike--and fan cycled a few times as well. I judged the bikes ready to change the oil, not by the initial 195F, but when the crank case was uncomfortable to the bare-hand by feeling both sides of the engine cases. Even using that criteria of a warm enough to change the oil engine, I did note, the actual oil temp was not unbearable to the touch as the oil drained. How I did it: the basic 1-2-- I got them warm, I drained them, I fresh filtered I fresh-oiled them, I got them warm and dosed with seafoam in the fuel (full fuel tanks)--seafoam treated fuel through the carbs and the carbs run dry! I also wrote the oil change data with a sharpie on the mirror, and the mileage the filter was changed on the filter cover. As suggested; I can also attest that the fans cycled several times. I did all this warm-ups by just letting them idle in the driveway without enricher. Maybe not the best, shrug. They got satisfactorily warm, I changed the oil. Odd thing while doing the KLX300R (a water cooled bike, no fan), after getting the oil warm (engine crank case very warm to the touch), drained it and went in the house for supper. Came back and moisture had condensed on the inside of the sight glass! This might be the first Dakota winter (#8) that I am fully prepared (cough)...and it won't even get cold. cough. yeah, right. not a cold winter in South Dakota.... All in all, I still got to ride 5 different bikes tonight at 38F, albeit, only about 10 miles total. shrug. Beats not riding at all. revmaaatin. who wonders how many moons to Spring? =5+> > List- > > Does riding the bike back that 1/4 mile and ~5-8 minutes engine time really matter as far as oil contamination for winter storage, or is it 'really-best' not to restart the motors after the fresh oil change for a 5 month storage? > > > > No wise guy remarks about the Mrs. car spot/garage. smile. > It's my one car garage for the summer, > Its hers for the nasty wx days of fall, winter, spring. > > revmaaatin. >
