Allow me to recycle my "idiot" "duh" story. My son had just bought a
new Husqvarna 610 SM. Sort of a KLR on steroids, and with really good
parts. He had read that the valves were typically out of adjustment
on new ones, so we proceeded to check the valves. Well, step one is
to find TDC. Not having a TDC indicator I decided to use a pencil. I
stuck the eraser end in the spark plug hole (its a very tiny hole)
and started to move the crank. I'd forgotten about the valve springs,
how they ride the cam and snap shut. Just a little movement and the
piston slapped to the 12 oclock position. The pencil was angled a bit
and it snapped off. I figured about 2 to 3 inches of lead pencil,
with eraser was in the cylinder. We spent over 10 hours on it. I
tried fishing it out with a forceps, no go. I tried floating it out
by filling the cylinder with fluid; still no go. The plug hole was
just too small. We considered just starting it up, blowing the pieces
out but some listers reported possible damage from the lead. Of
course the logical method would have been to remove the cylinder
head, but this is no easy fete, and the bike had 27 miles on it.
Finally I had a brainstorm. Lets use gravity. We hung the bike upside
down, removed the exhaust pipe to get to the valves, opened the
valves and "voila", the pencil pieces (it had been pretty well
smashed by now) were right on the valve. Have you ever tried to
suspend a motorcycle upside down in your garage? Note, this is not a
job for amateurs (like us). Finally, mission accomplished, pencil
removed, and oh yeh, the valves were right on!
And just what is the lesson here? I'll tell you, the lesson is "if it
ain't broke, don't fix it" go ride (unless its about the doohickey).
