Jeff, and all others interested in the soap called:
third world mechanics, by good old Jacob, good news.
We are talking here abt. the shock absorber linkage
dogbone lever, where it fits into the frame just under
the engine. The looong pivot bolt with the plastic
caps.
The first thing one should do is always, always!!!,
first loosen the bolt in the engine just one inch
above it. That could have avoided the stupid grinding
and all that.
Thing is, the Pivot Spacer, nice name for that stupid
piece of pipe inside the needle bearings, got stuck
somehow, but the dogbone lever had abt. 3 mm play, so
I assumed something else. But with the bearings
completely wasted, this spacer was probably askew
inside the holes, thus it got stuck, whereas if it had
been sitting straight, it would have come out easily.
That is the autopsy. The grinder with a 4,5 inch
wheel, had a tendency to grind other things as well,
but nothing a bit of epoxy steel putty won t cover up.
The hacksaw thing did not work, probably wrong blade.
We all like a good grind. Don t do it! Never.
With a chisel and a hammer in the vice I removed the
old kaput bearings. Then I wrapped waterproof
sandpaper around a screwdriver handle, and made the
inside smooth again. The new bearings are in the
freezer, and the dogbone is going into the oven,
tomorrow morning, I am already praying. Looking for a
piece of PVC pipe, or something round exactly the
right size, to help press the bearing in, with some
delicate (or not so) tapping. Not even Fred wants me
to screw this up, and I don t want to order a couple
of dozen bearings, for the try and error process.
Tomorrow another episode in this tearjerking novela:
La moto y la bestia. Jake.
