Correct. Choose oil weight based on expected temp. Here in CA, I use 10w-40 during winter, and switch to 20w-50 in summer. I also use the Shell Rotella, as I use it in my dodge cummins diesel also. Jeff A20 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Blake, Just watching and reading the previous post from the South Dakota sidelines, I was pretty sure that something was wrong with someone's manual, as mine was pretty specific (A15) about temps and things. Amazing that your manual would be missing this critical info of OAT operating temps and rec oil vis. Pretty cool how you were asking for substantiation from Doug, and it was provided in a timely and polite manner. I believe that would be called communication. revmaaatin.

Yup, same thought. And if anybody with an earlier manual *does* have the chart, that would be good to know. This sort of seems like something that should be in the FAQ, with a picture of the chart. If we can trust this chart for an A16, then it would be good for any KLR650. The big question here is whether this chart is really correct for our bikes. I used it to select 20w-50 for myself, but others suggest that I should use something lighter. So, we continue the never ending oil thread. -- Doug Herr doug@...

Blake, Pass the salt, I need to eat some crow. I was sure the chart was in the A-15 owners manual. My A15 owners manual does not include the table for rec. oil vis/OAT. I may be cross confusing myself with the kids XR70/80/100 manuals or seeing it in the full klr600/650 maintenance manual (of which I cannot touch right now.) A15 owners manual: KL650-A15 part no. 99987-1011-01 revmaaatin.

Thanks! I guess it took Kawi about 15 years of KLR production to figure out that operating temperatures have an impact on viscosity selection.
