When I lived in Seattle it was not that unusual to see an airplane or a helicopter roaming down the road, granted it was usually being towed at the time. A Dr. on my street in Va was rebuilding a Cessna 172 and decided to taxi it (sans wings) down the street a few times one month until some old bitty complained. To a ten year old watching a plane go down his street was a pretty cool sight, especially with no airports within twenty miles.> The biggest thing I have seen flying down the road is an airplane..... > (or a Lincoln Navigator....or a semi.....)

How about seeing the Coca-Cola beverage trailer you are towing pull up along side you? Years ago when I was in college and working for Coca Cola in beautiful North Brunswick, NJ, I went out to deliver a beverage trailer to a fair. It was a decent sized trailer that you serve beverages out of, maybe 20' long. An older Coke lifer was driving, and I was riding shot gun trying to stay awake and recover from the daily college hangover. Driving down a small street at one point we realized the trailer had come unhitched and had run into the back of the rack truck we were in. But the driver did a good job of getting the truck and the trailer pulled over safely and no one was hurt. While trying to re-hitch the trailer, I could see that it wasn't fastening properly and it wasn't going to stay on the ball. The old timer didn't give a shit, and proceeded to rig it. I protested that there was no way that thing was going to hold and that we could kill someone. The old bastard basically told me to shut the f**k up and get in the truck or walk home (typical attitude of most of the lifers there at Coca Cola at the time). Well, being young and stupid, I got in the truck, fuming the whole time. Not 1/2 mile later, I see something funny in the right side mirror; its the trailer crusing along side us on the passenger side. It had unhitched of course, and was skidding its way along the curb. It finally stopped as the tongue of the trailer caught the grass and dirt between the sidewalk and the curb. When the truck stopped, I turned my head around to scream at the old bastard when I noticed 3 or 4 little kids walking along the side walk about 100 yards ahead of us. Those kids could've been killed if the trailer had unhitched 2 seconds later then it did. Well guess what the old bastard did? He rigged it again, told me to f**k off and proceeded to deliver the trailer to the fair. I was in a state of high anxiety the whole ride there. Thankfully the thing stayed attached somehow. I regret not doing more to stop that old bastard that day, but I was young, stupid, easily intimidated by these guys, and I wanted to keep what was then a very high paying job. First, when driving my cage home from work about two months ago on a four
lane freeway,I passed,in the oncoming outside lane,about a 17 foot runabout
boat that had completely come off it's trailer. Two guys were about to try to
rehook the boat to the crank mechanism and try to crank it up form the road
onto thr trailer.
While riding my 1981 Suzuki SP500 dual sport home from work,I was
entering the beginning of a freeway. The two lanes quickly squeeze down into
one.As I was moving over into the other lane, and admiring the beautiful Mt.
Rainier,I looked back and the car in front of me had dodged a complete, still
in the box, stainless steel double kitchen sink.I could not avoid hitting that
thing. As I hit the edge of it,it flipped up and nailed my left foot.I had tp
pu;; over to be sure my front wheel was still round-it was.Now and can no
longer say that I've hit everything but the kitchen sink! True story
though.

I don't get out much so I don't see a lot of things on the loose.
However, I was out on a country highway behind a big low-loader semi-
trailer (Olympic highway near Wagga Wagga, for you few aussies).
One of its spare wheels came off and happily bounced along the road
ahead of me.
Eventually the still bouncing and rolling wheel drifted off into the
ditch on the left side of the road and I considered gassing the bike
and getting past it, and then it bounced back up to the road and across
to the other side.
Then I did give the bike a handfull and got out of there before the
wheel had a chance to have another go at me.

I guess we've been lucky, there's only one thing that we've ever
encountered on the road. Years ago we were travelling in a full size Ford
Bronco at night on Route 128 in Massachusetts, heading for Gloucester. I
don't know why I didn't see it sooner, but noticed a muffler with a
section of tailpipe attached just before it went under the truck. It
banged and crashed around underneath as we passed over it, finally flying
up and out. The thing must have shot up 10 feet, and out 30. Thankfully,
nobody was behind us! Just after it flew out, my son said, "Houston, we
have a launch!"
Wise men still seek Him...

Trekking west across the lower part of Idaho....
from Montana toward Oregon... wide open high desert....
Launching from a gas stop, I hop on the two lane
accellerate rapidly.....climbing to 70, 80.......
scanning the desert, my head is angled right...my head
pans left across the straight road ahead, then slightly
left...eyes pickup a stationary antelope maybe 80yds out,
now approaching 90deg left to my line of travel.....
Somehow we hoddam lock eyes....the instant we do
he bolts....I begin this: check ahead, check antelope,
check ahead, check antelope,.....he appeared to match
my speed when I chilled at 70 which is when he begins
this suicidal trajectory in my direction......It wasn't
completely suicidal thank God....by the time our trajectories
met I had hard braked to about 35, which was when he was
stopped broadside for an instant about 9ft in front of me.
He darted off to the right, I released brake and coasted
by what would have been the point of impact.....with a full
size antelope gut emblazoned on my brain....he wasn't that big,
but he woulda took me out for sure.....
Hmmmm, Brian bro....from Canada.....you still out there?
I know he's got an excellent bear story.......

I was flollowing behind a truck pulling one of those cement-mixer-trailers
when a very large chunk of cement broke off. The cement chunk bounced just
high enough to clear my 280zx. I watched it go overhead through my t-tops,
and saw it hit the ground again just behind me in the mirror. Lucky it
didn't hit my windsheild.

Okay one more for the road....
Its 83' and me and my honey are bombing out 126 in my
66' El Camino. Its summer, hot...I'm hauling a load
of storage items to my folks in the Cali. desert....
Four El Camino wheels with inflated tires, are laid
ontop of the load to hold it down...The load is below
cab height....but the car travels above the speed limit
easily....
I'm heading East in one lane, two lanes of on-coming
are approaching....I hear a thud, glance in the rearview
and one wheel has caught air and flipped off the back.
I look ahead, and the opposing oncoming pack is nearing.
I check the rearview again...the tire is flipping in the lane
behind me, then hits just right and launches.....It takes
about a 20' arc in the air.....At last glance it appeared
as though it were going to drop on the hood or windshield
of the lead car in the pack(A Cadillac)......I had to look
in front of me again and when I took that last fleeting
glance back, the cars were scattering like pins in a bowling
alley just after a strike.....
I was reasoning that my life had just come to an end when
I turned the car around, and headed back....
The driver of the cadillac was actually quite polite, while
his wife demanded my head be served on a platter from
a distance....Actually the tire had missed all cars....The
El Dorado driver had swerved and missed it, lost a hubcab....
The rest of the cars had split.....
A Caddy hubcab, and learning to tie down loads was a cheap
price for me that day......alotta learning at a very lucky price.
confessing....
