Hey everybody!

First off I just want to say what an awesome resource this is that I
stumbled upon. Every imaginable question, answer and topic are discussed
here. I have been trying to decide on a bike for quite some time after the
1150GS plans fell through (so glad they did!) and its from reading these
posts that I'm feeling very comfortable about my thoughts of getting a KLR.

Just have two quick questions: 1. Here in Vancouver, B.C. I've come
 across a 2002 KLR650A for $6800CAN out the door or $4,259.32US (0.62637
exchange). Is this a fair deal? Ive have some trouble finding used KLRs in
the buysell paper, hopefully something comes up quickly because ive got
itchy feet and might just go get one next weekend. 2nd question: Whats this
Automatic Compression Release? I've read somewhere to be careful when
working on the engine because of this, I also read somewhere its got
something to do with easier starting of the big single. Oh wait, I have a
third question to all the people doing long distance riding on the KLR:
Hows the vibration of the single on long trips, say... 750-1000 miles a day?
All my previous bikes have been 500cc twins so Im a little skeptic about the
fact that one cylinder produced almost 50hp doesn't produce much vibration.
 Thanks again for the info,
 Tom.

Hi all,

Does anyone know of some aftermarket fork wipers I can get for my KLR? My
fork boots are ruined and I would like to go with a "cleaner" look.

 Thanks to any replies!

hELLO,
I am a new owner having only recently bought a newish 2001.(A?)
I am a little familiar with diesel mechanics but this single bore petrol
stuff is new to me,but I like it a lot!(end of spam)
I am going to ride this bike accross the continent. From Boston, down the Blue
Ridge Parkway, through Tenn/Ark/Ok/NM/AZ/CA/ to Seattle where I am going to
stay. This could be a Ted Simon sized epic.(If you have not read 'Jupiter's
Travels' I reccomend that you do).
My question is more an invitation for general advice,Horror stories, others'
experience and mostly: What are the most important modifications I should
really do to the bike? And what are invaluable spares? What's gonna break
 first?Shall we place bets?
 I invite any messages
Thanks folks, looking forward to hearing back

FWIW. Some of you folks who use GPS may be interested in this. Got the
link off Lockergnome.com, one of my favorite sites.
 The website is http://www.gpstm.com/
 Here's a screenshot http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/gpstrackmaker.png
 The download is http://www.gpstm.com/download/gtm116.exe
Enjoy and keep the rubber side down.

Have a `99 KLR650 with 9k miles. The other day it started cutting out
on me on the freeway. Was able to make it home, but just barely.
Wouldn't idle at all. Cleaned the carb, nothing stood out at me. Did
the balancer chain slack adjustment. Checked the valve clearances and
the exhaust valves clearances were way too short. Replaced shims and
it started right up, no problem. However I have a loud knock. Can't
be sure but it doesn't sound as though it is coming from the
transmission case. Pulled head and cylinder. The valves look really
good other than a lot of carbon and the piston was very carboned up.
There is almost no slop in the crank and connector rod, There is no
sign that the piston has been slapping or that it has made contact
with a valve. Have cleaned everything and am going back together with
it. The carbon is all I found wrong. I'm not confident that's the
problem even though the manual says carbon buildup can cause engine
noise. With no smoking gun I'm at a loss here.

Anyone have any clues or maybe a similar experience form me to draw
 from?
