Yeah I have not heard good about KTM but some love them. Expensive, hard to work on and parts you have to wait on (and expensive). I like Japanese stuff.

I no longer get tired of the moto magazines doing what they do because I got tired of reading them altogether about seven or eight years ago. I don't lust after new motorbikes any more either; dunno if that is cause or effect of not reading the magazines, or if it's totally unrelated. (Actually, I misspoke there. I do sort of lust after the Sachs Madass, but that is a different subject.)
In any event, I already have more motorcycles than I know what to do with, and I can do just about anything I want to do on them. I have multi-cylinder road bikes that I hardly ride at all any more. The bikes I ride the most are my 650-class single-cylinder dual sport bikes. Any one of them is capable of doing any road trip I want to do, and will allow me to explare all I want on the way or at my destination.
Most places I want to go, a 650 single is just about ideal, unless it is one of those places where a 250 or 400 is better. The guys on the multi-cylinder "adventure" bikes may fantasize about going the same places. Their bikes are good at getting to where the good riding starts, but once they get there, their bikes are too big to have any fun on. The bike mags can't tell you that because they need to help their advertisers sell bikes, and the manufacturers can't make a lot of money selling $5000 650 singles.

They have more power.....but never have I had a problem with the KLR power....except maybe passing a double logging truck in Mexico at 7000 ft elevation (another story). I tell people my KLR is more comfortable in leg room and seating position than my 2001 Concours or Versys....with a Corbin. I have done numerous 730 mile days, ridden on mud, sand and rock. Maintenance is fairly easy. Friends who ride more expensive mounts say "that thing must beat you to death." Errrr.....no......I took a good ride a couple days ago.....and realized once again of what a great choice I made, 14 years ago. 55,000 on the clock and running fine. > > Criswell > > Sent from my iPad >

Shoot, Criswell, I am on my eighth KLR, (starting on a '93, and progressing to a '10, which I use mated to a side hack for much of the year due to WINTER!), I own lots of bikes, but my KLR gets the nod almost all of the time except for Baja, long roaders, or PNWMA races!
I quit worrying about the lack of "snob appeal" a long time ago, and just smile when people start dissin' the KLR!

May I pick your brain, Mur ? How does the hack work with the KLR ? Top speed ? MPG ? Weird handling ? Tire wear ? What brand of hack I assume it's a lighter version ?
Bogdan who knows el is a Spanish article but also knows there's no mur word in Spanish; there is a muro. Mur does mean wall in Polish.

I read Motorcycle Consumer News pretty much cover to cover, every month. For the rest, I can't tell the articles from the ads, and if I wanted Viagra I wouldn't buy it out of a motorcycle magazine (the health column in MCN is very helpful, btw).

I don't know about the MCN health columns. He makes blanket statements on subjects that are at least controversial.

Come to think of it, the health columnist is fairly new and the it's the old one (can't recall his name) I liked so much. But I read this new guy and even if there's room for disagreement it's good food for thought. Bogdan, if you haven't already, I suggest you write MCN about this. It's not a mag with a huge circulation so letters are likely to be published. And the editors are not shy about admitting mistakes, unlike most others, who are more interested in protecting their good reputations than making sure they deserve those reputations. -James

I also do get tired of the bike mags overlooking the value of the KLR. For me, one who could not afford another bike. I am thankful for my KLR. I've commuted many miles, long distance trips (long distance for me anyway) and I am getting my investment back and then some. Sure I'd love to have a Beemer or Tenere, something bigger but I cannot forget how flawlessly it has taken me the many miles I've gone. I also agree it is easy to work on. Even though it is a well ridden '08 (over 50K), it has been farm led, repainted, has a few cracks and scrapes on the farings, it's still gets positive comments from passersby telling me how cool this bike is.
Best advice I took from a friend was to buy a KLR. Glad I listened...
Respects,
Steve
