I turned over my engine with a ratchet and I don't feel hardly any compression. I think my rings are shot. Or I have carbon deposits holding a valve open like Jeff suggested. This engine's been an huge oil burner since I put the bike back together. I was putting off rebuilding the top end but I guess it's time.
Hopefully all I need are new rings and a honing...

I adjusted the valves to max clearance about 3,000 miles ago.

Could be your rings or your KACR system working.

KACR was my first thought. It's not supposed to have much compression when it isn't running.

I checked the other KLR. It felt like it had a little more compression, but not a lot. One difference is I heard gear whine while turning his over. I didn't feel any of that when I turned mine over. I'm using a 19 mm socket on the rotor bolt under the left side case. I removed the plastic plug.

Your engine normally runs counterclockwise from the fly wheel side and if you try to turn the engine backwards it will engage your starter and that is probably the gear whine you hear.

heideneau k60 scout tires
I've run the 270 on a couple of bikes and it handles well enough. If I were doing that pattern again I'd opt for the IRC GP1 that it was copied from to get a little softer compound. The K60 seems a bit more expensive as DS tires go and those who've been running it have offered good reports on mileage and handling for all but deep sand/mud. I have 2 weeks and about 2300 DS miles coming up in Sept. Should be a good opportunity to test the K60 for myself.
