cam chain tension

Post by John Biccum » Mon Jul 23, 2012 7:55 pm

I was going to suggest this check. There should not be any gas in this line. If there is gas in the line it is leaking from a failed petcock diaphragm. Rather than trying to get the vacuum-operated petcock to work properly, I'd convert the stock petcock to full-manual or fit an aftermarket petcock (e.g Pingel, ~$100) From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of Dooden Sent: Monday, July 23, 2012 4:22 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Cam chain tension Quick simple checks also. Vacuum line to petcock - Inspect and the carb vent hose,Good time to add a "T" in line also. See FAQ Dooden A15 Green Ape --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com , Tam a'Rack wrote:

effect a temporary repair with electrical tape or RTV, but the real solution is a new diaphragm (a new slide, really, with diaphragm attached). Don't buy the Kawi part, which goes for something north of a hunnert bucks. The Harley Sportster part (before FI, sportsters used a CV40 carb very similar to the CVK 40 on the KLR) is closer to forty dollars.

I have to disagree here. Replacing the diaphragm is the simplest fix there is. (Converting to gravity is pretty simple, but a straight parts swap is easier still.) My vacuum petcock was trouble free for close to 50,000 miles. The only reason I converted was because i had Jeff Saline's kit on hand, and would have had to wait for the stock parts. There's nothing wrong with converting, but I'd be hard put to call the stock system troublesome or unreliable.

My 1983 Honda CB650SC (Nighthawk) has never had an issue with the vacuum petcock leaking. I have never had a bike with a vacuum petcock that did have an issue with the vacuum part... My 1981 Goldwing has almost 200k on it and has not had a petcock problem. I have had (and still have) a number of older bikes, and I can not recall ever having a vacuum related petcock problem. (other than the vacuum hose coming off or cracking, but that is not the petcocks problem) Of course, 99% of the time I turn the petcock to off when I park the bike for more than a couple of hours. So I may be skewing the stats a bit. Anyhow, I will play with the fool thing when I get a chance and see if it is or is not a problem... cam chain tension

My '00 drove me totally nuts for about 4 months while I had problems with it bogging and missing while running down the superslab at 80 for 45mins~an hour. Could not duplicate the issue unless I was on the slab. Went through carb multiple times, pulled tank and petcock several times, installed rebuild kits on both, replaced fuel and vent lines...finally I converted petcock from vacuum to gravity feed and haven't had an issue since. My point is, it can happen, and when you're done with Dr Psych...it may well be one of the simple things suggested on a forum. Oh, and now I've got a DRZ carb driving me nuts...the Psych is picking out his new BMW...LOL. When he mentioned cam chain tension, I thought he really meant doohickey/balancer shaft chain tension. I have never seen a KLR with cam chain tension issues. But, now you guys think he actually meant petcock vacuum? Wow...tangents J#3

Try to loosen clamps, bolts and maybe twist the muffler it back more gooder ? Maybe tab is bent on muffler ? If I was riding offroad and this happened, I would try a size 10 Tactical boot as a adjuster. Dooden A15 Green Ape

How to shift it without putting unwanted pressure on other parts of the bike is turning out to be a complicated question indeed... > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] >
