You need to first decide how much time you need to spend in the saddle. I have done several back to back 12 hour rally days on my 08 without too much issue. The Walmart ATV seat pad or even SeatConcepts cover might be enough to get you where you need to be If you are looking to move up from Sunday rides and commuting to a Prudhoe bay ride. If you are looking at real LD stuff, as in IBA qualifyign rides, you need to consider a Day Long or Russel saddle, dont bother with any of the cheap assed alternatives since they qualify as bringing a knife to a gun fight. The expense is well worth it if you plan to be in the saddle for long days.
On the subject of 10% of bike cost I would say that if you are looking at LD stuff, the IBA kind, then you have the wrong bike for it. The Saddle seems an extravegant expense compared to the bike cost because you are trying to enter a garden tractor in the Gumbal Rally. The KLR is a great general purpose bike. Mine is my pickup truck, garden tractor, commuter, runabout, rally bike...It does a lot of things well and can play in a lot of arenas.
Unfortunately Hard Core LD riding is not one of those Arenas. KLRs have been entered in the IBA rally but they are not competitive. They generaly dont finish the rally and what is left at the end is ready for a last bolt restore. Any member of the IBA, myself included, will tell you right up front that you need the right gear. A cheapo KLR seat making your but sore will be the least of your problems after a few back to back 12 hour days. The rest of the bike isnt up to the task

I have the Corbin Flat on my '07. I am 5'9" and weigh in at a hefty 240Lbs. This seat is terrific and along with an Areostich sheepskin seat cover. Sore butts are a thing of the past..

Stearns = Coleman.
Same company, same pad. They just recently changed the branding.

Thank you all for your considerations of my anterior needs. To clarify
a couple of things that came up in the conversation... I have a 2007
KLR 650 and my long distance trips are usually about 6 hours. I am very
much aware of the KLR's weaknesses on the highway as well as off road
but it is the bike I have because it is the bike I need. I oft times
find myself having to go across field to do living history or go
hunting/fishing. I have been from the mountains to the beach and packed
enough gear including my Australian stock saddle to do 3 different
interpretations over 11 days and 1200 miles. I love this bike. All
that being said, I appreciate the concerns expressed ie. the gum ball
rally comment.
I am mighty cheap and as a result fairly handy. I like what I see in
the seat covers and think I will probably head that way. I'm sure I can
find a way to more or less permanently affix them to the current seat if
I like them. I think I just need a little extra support and cushion as
I can ride in my horse saddle for three to five hours without any problem.
Again, thanks for your quick responses great insights.
Regards,
Jim

Might take off more than just the pressure. Looks like it s designed for gelding the rider.

long distance saddle
I have seen the same idea on bicycle seats. As the material says, it's designed to hold your "cargo" in place. Your package isn't going anywhere.

A custom seat is one way, but they cost a lot. There are a lot of cheaper alternatives, from wooden beads, to sheepskin, to the Wally World seat cushion, to Honey Buns (or whatever they are called) a cordura cover that holds a couple of big pop bottles that support your inner thighs. I have not tried these last ones, but legendary adventure tourer and cheapskate Charlie Coons swears by them. > > > > Wooden beads and sheepskin are an improvement over the stock seat, but not as good as a dished Corbin, which in turn is not as good as a flat Corbin. > > > > The Meyer/Russell widebody seats are probably going to be the most comfortable, but I gather you don't like the price.
