A reputable dealer couldn't figure out how to assemble the airbox on my ZR-7 and proceeded to break the filter assembly. Another reputable dealer, commissioned with solving the resultant off-idle bog, replaced the filter but didn't oil it. I'm glad I checked it out right after buying the [used] bike. RM

Today was air cleaner cleaning day for all the vehicles with cleanable air filters. I opened the air filter box on the A7 to find a lot of white dust in the box. The notoil filter resembled a brown turd with several layers of dirt. I removed the filter. Inspected the inside of the filter, clean looks like new. After two washes and rinses of the filter with the notoil cleaning solution the filter looks new again. Dried the filter. Re-oil and re-install the filter and the A7 is now ready for for more abuse I mean riding. Thanks to everyone that suggested the Notoil filter system. Several thousand miles off-road later I am now a believer.

I also use the not oil system and have never seen dirt on the inside of the filter. It sure is hard to get the red supergoo off my hands! Kevin A17

You're correct about the Notoil filter oil being very sticky but that's by design. Its suppose to be sticky. When I do mine, I wear disposable plastic gloves available in the paint/hardware stores. This makes clean up a lot simpler.

Can you believe that my air cleaner is falling apart after just 6 years. Was doing my normal quarterly maintenance and saw it was starting to split on the edges, touched it and pulled and it came apart. Sigh! Oh well, ordered a new one from Fred Yesterday morning. I'm gonna say probably not. As I have only heard of one potential purchaser, the market apparently does not justify the cost of the tooling.

Hi Ron, Pull it off and gently hand-wash it in the sink with mild dish soap and water. Inspect for deterioration and tears, let it dry, then re-oil and re-install. You can use spray on sticky filter oil or you can just use motor oil per the manufacturer's instructions. The filter should be saturated but not soaked. Do it "when you need to". I usually check mine at each oil change. I have an extra one I keep on the shelf next to my oil, ready to go in a plastic bag. When I change out the dirty one I clean it, oil it, and put it in the bag for next time. -Jeff

A foam type air filter can be cleaned pretty often as it is the oil on the filter that traps the dirt. Use a water soluble cleaner to extend the life of your filter. Any type of degreaser will work on a foam type of filter to clean it but petro based solvents will attack the adhesives holding your filter together and shorten it s life. I believe in using a air filter oil to re-oil your filter. Some get by with just about anything but I believe oil specifically designed to trap dirt is better than a lubricating oil. A gauze-type (K&N) shouldn t be cleaned as often as a foam type filter. You can have a pretty heavy layer of dirt on the outside and the filter will still filter air and breathe well. Dirt on the outside of a gauze-type filter is a good thing, as it helps attract more dirt and keeps it from going into your motor. K&N makes their own cleaner and oil and I would have to recommend using their products. Cleaning a gauze-type filter too often is probably why some say they pass dirt. I have never had that problem. I usually wait till I notice a performance loss before cleaning a gauze-type filter. You can over-oil an air filter and have them perform just like a filter that is clogged with dirt. A filter needs just a light amount of oil to filter out dirt and too much oil will not let the filter pass the air that your engine needs.
