stu's sweet frame mod

Post by Russell Scott » Sat Oct 16, 2010 1:57 am

Fred, Stu got tired of me getting all the attention with my deer busting, fire breathing, busted front fork, bent triple clamp, never say die super scooter. It will soon be put out to stud in Boulder, Utah. So if your ever passing through Boulder on the way to Moab. look for a blue, beat up KLR, and treat her nice, because I didn t.

Is this the same bike that caught fire?  Wonder if these events are related?

Think this bike is cursed?  I say good riddance.

~~~Mark, The KTM 950A I bought last July (bike I'm riding now) made a horrible noise every time the rear brake was applied. It too uses a Brembo caliper I read a bunch of posts on OC (ADV Rider) where some same bike owners(KTM Adventure series) were complianing of noisy rear brake squeal. Some claimed changing to a different pad compound solved the noise problem What I did with mine was when I had the wheel off for a tire change I pulled the brake pads/and pad pin and examined the pads. There was plenty of pad left and being a frugal sort, I couldn't see tossing these pads and try something else...so what I did was clean both pads backing plates up using a degreaser (water soluable) and a parts brush to remove any grime on the backing plate After they dried I applied a high temp silicone grease using only a fine smear on the backing plates. I like and use NAPA Syl-Glide...I think it's good up to 800 degrees f so it wont melt, but use sparingly so it wont fling onto the brake pad I also cleaned the pad pin w/3M and used Syl-Glide on the pin, then put it back togethetr. Guess what? The noise was gone. Sometimes (in my instance), this noise emanates from harmonic vibrations between the backing plate and the caliper pistons. The use of a lubricant such as the high temp silicone grease I used, dampens those vibrations, thus eliminating 'brake squeal' FWIW, this is the first Brembo caliper I've used that ever made this nosie. I've had Brembo calipers on the one Ducati I rode and several Moto Guzzis but none of them ever made a peep as far as brake squeal goes. i've had other brake disc/pads/calipers do this but I can't remember the brands. It's my understanding this is fairly common. Our 98' F-150 front calipers do this when cold yet when the brakes warm up, no more noise. Now the KTM I have did it all the time (hot or cold), but not anymore since cleaning the backing plates and applying high temp silicone grease Jake Reddick Fla.
