Armor for the body is a good thing: http://www.newenough.com/ Get on their e-mailing list for specials Do yourself a big favor and hard armor a couple of items on your bike as well. 1.Barkbusters (or similar) for the levers 2.move the L mirror inboard to the clutch perch/mod; it also moves the fragile choke/enricher lever to a safer location 3.serrated footpegs: (DR650 pegs will allow you to use your OEM shift lever; other WIDE footpegs will require other adjustments) you will find it difficult to keep your feet on the rubber pegs if they are wet, and WILL NOT stay on rubber-pegs if your boots/flipflops are muddy. 4. mirror isolators give the mirrors about 30degree of bend rather than just breaking off when you fall down 5. HD rear brake billet 6. low profile magnetic drain plug irt to your levers: 7 (free) make sure they are not overly tight. Snug only the attachment screws--so that if you fall down, the lever can rotate on the handle bars. The bark-busters: those bolts should be tight. I am not as sure about the metal skid plates; I have 4 of them, but it is not necessary for all riders in all locations. Having said that, I have 1/4 deflections in the bottom of one of them and have not recollection of hitting a rock so hard that it would have left a dent. What to armor? Assess the amount of risk you are will to accept; armor your bike and body accordingly. I will tell you, I have never replaced a single mirror, switch quadrant, or choke mount or lever after the items above were installed; and don't recall anyone else here that broke an armored item from 'normal' wear and tear. Being run over by a car...now that is a different story. No armor will protect you from everything possible. revmaaatin.

This debate will go on till end of time. What will eventually happen is government intervention. Could be Fed., State or even local but there will come a time the "nanny state" comes to be. Much as I hate that and would rather people use some common sense it won't happen because of selfishness and the "me" generation. All my bikes have stock exhaust now, but wasn't always the case. Call me a hypocrite but I have re-jetted a few and taken the CA EPA crap off in some cases. The KLR is one of them. It hurts no one but me if the state starts checking them. That won't surprise me either. Re-jetting and de-smoging my ZRX and KLR was the best ridability upgrade ever. One bike that's needs it next is a W650. That great little bike will improve ten fold afterwards. Stock air box and exhaust on all. It just makes sense IMO of course.
