replace or repair?

Post by Richard Decker » Sat Apr 03, 2010 2:18 pm

Remember too, as long as you dont settle out with them, the case remains open on that person's desk and makes bad marks against them. They are judged on how long it takes them to close out claims. Pick yourself out three identical bikes within the area, avg the cost of them and tell them that's what the value is. Make sure you have the printouts to back yourself up. My Escort was rear ended recently. Their insurance only wanted to give me $800 for it, but that wasnt what it was worth. Eventually with the printouts I got $1600 for it and paid the salvage value, $106, to keep it. Ask for proof of the salvage value and who they are selling it to for that price. They cant just pull that number out of their rear end. -Rich in Newberg OR

You can t argue with them because if you don t like the price you don t have to trade in. Most insurance companies use NADA which usually has the highest value of estimates. They have to settle with you and by using NADA there is less chance you could argue it is too low. If your insurance company does not use NADA you need to find another company. If you are still not happy with the price you could do your homework as to the value in your area, however I am not getting in to that as a Google search will find how to do it.

Also note that whatever you do there will most likely be a report as to the cost of repair which will show on CarFax should you ever want to sell it.

4) The bad part is what is it worth? The insurance company will use the "Blue Book" to value it and if it needs more work than the Blue Book value they will only give you the Blue Book value, minus the deductible. Your Blue Book value from http://www.kbb.com/motorcycle/retail/2009/kawasaki/kl650e-klr650/250288 is $4225. Therefore, if you have $1,000 deductible and the repairs are more than $3225, you only get $3225. I hope this helps. Robert P. Wichert P.Eng+1 916 966 9060FAX +1 916 966 9068

OK, so NADA is higher, so if they are saying less than $4225, he should NOT get another insurance company because he can't.  He's stuck with them for this crash!!!!  He should call the insurance commissioner, like I said. I'm sticking to my two points: 1)    Get a repair estimate FROM THE DEALER.  DON'T ACCEPT THE ADJUSTER'S ESTIMATE. 2)    Figure out based on the value they put on the bike (NADA or KBB), your deductible, and the repair estimate what they MUST DO.  Feel free to read the policy too. Good luck! Robert P. Wichert P.Eng +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ========================================================
