cable lube

Post by beachmike1 » Sun Mar 21, 2010 11:11 pm

Cales need lube no matter what the sheath is. As time and weather changes and the mep canges, and the humidity changes a few things happen. One the lube in the cable gets water, misture etc in it over time. The cable will corrode a bit from this, note i did not say rust, i said corrode, the more general ter. Also as the cable is used the separate fibers rub against each other. this move the lube out from th interfaces of the strands. As this happens teh wear increases. The proctive oxode on the outer surface of the cable is harder than the cable material itself. It wears off (it is also weaker than the cable material and less flexible being an oxide) and it is abrasive to the cable material. If this is not periodically removed and new lube put in its place the cable wears faster. The best lubes for low stress cables are greases. Thhey are hard to get into a cable. This what a good cable lube it, a grease in a solvent with a low flash point (or hig vapor pressure is not flammable). This allows the thin , low viscosity lube to ...travel down the cable, clean out some of the crude (oxide and lube mix, and replace the junk with good lube, with the solvent flashing off leaving a good water resistant grease behind. The old oil with a baggie approach is good for cleaning except a cable lubeer works better since pressure help move the crude out. The luber and lube should be applied until the stuff coming out is clean. Not that the cable is per se clean, but it is a good as it is going to get. The old baggie thing with kerosene is okay but a pain for no real cost benift. If you can bust for a $5 can of lube cleaner once every two years...well maybe you just like making a mess with kerosene which stinks. Alsothe oil you can get down the cable is not a good grease and it will keep on flowing out until the cable is dry. WD40 is NOT a lubricant. it is a water dispersing agent.

Try Eureka Tents site and go to their 2nds store. Last year I bought a Pinnacle Peak?? that listed for $189 but the 2nd was $69.00 and waranteed. I went over every inch of seam, zippers, poles, and I have no clue as to why this was a 2nd. Showroom used, Outdoor Product Expo, some color variation, or dye runs, were mentioned as possibilities. 2 man/3 Season, doors at each end with vestibule at each end. Works for me! Had some nice weather here on Saturday, went for the 1st ride of the year!! Monte
