cleaning a clutch cable

Right on Jeff, if the cable is suspect, put a new one on and throw the other one out, or clean, lube and carry as a spare. Now you can slide the tube in and out, changing the length to reach most areas, like chains, pivot points etc. You can also now poke it into the cable-luber and squeeze the oil through the cable. Once you are done, push the tube in enough so the cap will close and you can carry it with you. Whoooooozzz yer innovator!!! > > TK > TK-I might give this a try. Great suggestion. Reminds me of the old Teflon lube bottle you bought for gun work--4oz with a 3" 'clear' tube. Will your suggestion work just as well with a clear or black spray tube? wink. IRT to previous post using the Motion Pro device--I have found I get about the same amount in the cable using a pressurized wd-40 can for 'flushing' as the cable lube device. Safety goggles used, of course--and an old shirt. Thanks for those who replied--just looking for a way to really, really, clean the cable's innards. Those doing cable maintenace, remember to hit the cable end 'ball' with a dab of grease as well. revmaaatin.

Rev  Oh man, I'm having flashbacks to my Dad "teaching me" how to correctly and completely clean old gasket material from block and head surfaces. Oh, or the time he had me clean all the oxidized paint from his girlfriends car, by hand... #ygrps-yiv-1465582420 p {margin:0;}OK John, You officially take the award. I'm paranoid, and I freely admit it.  Even when I'm just riding the slab I always take enough tools to nearly disassemble the bike, a compact compressor, tube patch kit, tire spoons, flashlight, a prop rod, etc. etc. etc. -BUT- It never occurred to me to do that. -Jeff Khoury

aluminum panniers

Post by Michael » Sat Mar 20, 2010 5:50 am

Hi, I just saw these in in the Medford, Oregon Craigslist. I have had these identical BOXES for about 2 years AND WOULD NOT TRADE THEM. I haul stuff all the time. I just wanted to pass this along as this is great deal if someone needs them and is in northern California or Southern Oregon. If someone wanted to buy them that was coming through here soon I could store them until you get here. You would have to work your own deal out with the seller. On occasion, I head up to Portland or down to Sacramento but have no firm plans at this time. You can email me for my phone number if you need it. cleaning a clutch cable

Post by Jud » Sat Mar 20, 2010 8:34 am

I just use a cable luber. Cleaning the cable does not strike me as an issue; I should think the sheath keeps the dirt out for the most part. The lubricant would flush out anything there. I'll use WD40 if it is the only thing at hand, but I prefer a light oil or TriFlow.

Nasty, nasty, nasty. Seems like a cable could benefit from a once yearly flush with kerosene. Any known problems of doing this? > > Technique: Instead of a baggie, I was thinking of using a plastic funnel, place the cable through the funnel opening and use some silicone to plug the funnel.
