I'm one of the guys on dial up and I sure hope folks abide by that criteria although I'm not sure that small to a dial up user is the same as small to a person on high speed internet. I think it will be more important than ever now for folks replying to messages to make sure they remove attachments so we don't receive the same information multiple times. I only use the list via e-mail and if the bandwidth gets to be too much I can see it hampering my ability to download and process list traffic. Should be interesting seeing how this works. I'm not seeing any attachments.
If I log onto the group on the web, I see some text at the bottom of a post with the attachment name, but no picture.
In the Daily Digest I receive via email, I see no evidence of attachments at all.

Fred and all, The problem with making decisions about attachments (and such) based on poll numbers is that a forum like this cannot really function strictly on the basis of majority rules. Even if 80% of users want attachments, it is always in the interests of all (including even that 80%) to protect the interests of the minority. In fact, it is always in the interests of all of us to protect the interests of all of the rest, particularly since we are all part of the majority in many respects but the minority in others. It is also worth considering that including attachments will likely render the forum unusable for the minority, while continuing to ban them is at worst a minor inconvenience for the majority (since links can always be provided for those who want to offer photos, video, or other outside files). I will vote in the poll. But I will also offer that I am often far from home, usually on my KLR, and if you think the quality of dialup is suspect in the USA I can attest that it is far worse in, say, West Africa, Central America, or Albania. With attachments, unless strictly controlled for size and number, the forum will be unusable for me most of the time. Given the number and quality of my posts, this might seem like a good thing to some of you, but that is another story entirely. Thanks for listening, and thanks to all for your various contributions. I have my Yahoo preferences set to receive daily digest in text mode, and that's still how it shows up: text only, no attachments. So, it looks like you can still "override" the master list settings to some extent, and limit the required bandwidth. Chris -- J. Those that receive their messages by the digest or from the web site will not be able to see these photos. Only those that receive their messages by email. It is one way or the other. That is the only option from Yahoo. Fred

Mark, I would make two suggestions. If you are on a dialup connection, I would turn off "rich text". Not sure if that would eliminate all attachments, but you have the option then of not opening them. I would also highly recommend using a good anti virus program and keeping it up to date. I wouldn't think any computer these days would last very long without a good AV program. Fred

Thanks for the explanation, Fred. So that means if we're on a dial-up connection or have some other reason for not wanting attachments, there are ways we can not receive them. Sounds like a best of both worlds scenario. Lars

No, the dial up connection has nothing to do with how you receive messages other than it is much s l o w e r . How you have your preferences set on the main web site will determine how you view your messages. Email messages and rich text = photos. No email or digest = no photos. Email with plain text might also stop photos.

I remember my dial up days when I'd return from a week away from my computer, log on, get mail, and walk away for a half hour (or longer) while as many as 2000 emails downloaded. Sometimes it took as much as an hour to get all of my messages. I imagine that it's worse now, since file size has become larger and larger over time. Most users have the option to change the behavior of their email client by limiting the size of individual emails. For example, in Thunderbird, you can tell it not to download emails of a size larger than "x" (you get to determine what that size is).
I wonder how many members get individual emails vs. going direct to yahoo groups, or use their web mail interface. (I get individual emails). With each method, there are ways to speed up your viewing of the messages. With web mail interface, you can see how large the file size is, so you can decide not to click on that email.
I'm in several email groups. A few years ago, one of them changed to allow attachments and RTF. Of course, many complained - especially when people broke the voluntary 200k email size. Today, some people really break that limit by sending off topic wmv files, huge pictures, etc. This is when the dial up people complain, and rightfully so.
Despite the apparent hardship for users, there are many options available to limit the amount of your resources and time with viewing email. GMAIL (web based) is a good option, as is Thunderbird (just set your client to limit email downloads to messages of 200k or smaller). Of course, you will end up not getting to see some of the spectacular pictures that people are proud of.
My only current pet peeve is when people send photos in exactly as they were taken by their 10 megapixel cameras - and I find myself looking at a giant eyeball rather than the full shot that the sender really wants you to see. Then, if you want to see the entire picture, you have to save it to your computer first, then view it.
My ISP recently increased user mail box size from 10mb to 100mb. Despite that, I sometimes hit my limit in less than one week if I have not downloaded all of my email. I'd max out in one day at the old limit.
Mike
