Ah, DC grasshopper-- Yes, some AL, caught in the filter. So why the magnetic drainplug? There is actually a constant 'grinding' of fine particles mostly due to the interface of the transmission gears. Sometimes these will manifest themselves as 'wire-wiskers' which is also normal. What is most important, is that you dont want those fine particles or wire wiskers runnign through the oil pump--if it can be easily avoided. So why is it not installed from the factory? IMO: KHI is only responsible to the first owner. Most first owners will not ride them long enough that a magnetic drainplug will matter. And a matter of added cost as well. Most of the higher mileage bikes are ridden by the 2d/3rd,4th owner, and KHI has no loyalty to them. Although a magnetic drain plug was not #1 on my list, it is very, very high =important. My 98' 20Kmile KLR (me=4th owner) had bu-coo farkle on it to include a Jakes dohickey (so we know it had been there a while), but no magnetic drain plug, no blade fuses. Perplexing, but replaced on arrival from TX to South Dakota. After the magnetic drain-plug installation--on its very first oil change, it 'caught' 1/2 inch piece of dohickey that had been wandering around in there for no telling how long. Yeah, maybe I would move the magnetic drain plug in priority. As well as the thermobob. Unbelievable--at 50F, the water temp is a proper 195F. Thanks Watson. So elementary, that even Sherlock would get it. revmaaatin. owner of 3 hard-armored KLR's; full equipped with installed thermobobs.> > Would the shavings in the engine not be mostly aluminium? > DC
