carb jetting

Post by Doug Pippin » Fri Sep 26, 2003 8:15 am

I've put a couple of hundred miles on my "new to me" A16 and would like to improve the engine performance a little. I've ordered a KLX Adjustable Needle N1-TB - p/n 16009-1794, Needle Clip -p/n 92037-1401, and Needle Spacer - p/n 92143-1667 for the carburetor. Hoping that someone out there has rejetted successfully and can give me base line settings. What main jet did you use? What notch on the needle did you use? Any other suggestions Doug in Western North Carolina ---------- Doug Pippin 828-684-8488 dpippin5@... ---------- [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

First of all, If you drill a 1/8 inch hole in the slide, you will lose about 3+mpg even if you dont change anything else. But it will let you accelerate faster. Use the top slot, the spacer goes on top between the clip and white plastic part. You may want to go with a Kehien 150 (i think thats the #). You will get maybe 45- mpg. but it depends on your altitude most of all

Don't do it. It's something that you can't undo. You will lose mpg.

carb jetting

Someone asked what needle clip position people were using for the KLX needle in the 148 main jet KLR. (Maybe I'm adding specifics. ) This reminded me that I picked up the needle, washer, and clip quite a while ago and forgot them in my parts box. Perhaps someone can advise as to a starting point for the needle clip for a stock KLR with original airbox, and stock exhaust. I could start with the tried and true second groove from the top but pulling the carb several times tries my sense of humour......... When I replaced my diaphragm I was able top twist the carb around so that I could take the top off without pulling the carb. Hope this helps

<><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> Steve, I haven't seen a reply yet so here's what I would do... I'd make the cable a tad slack in the off position so the enricher piston in the carb and on the end of the cable can move fully into the bore. Then I'd do a cold condition start and make sure the bike would start. I think making sure it is off when the lever is in the off position is most important as long as the bike starts cold. I've got notes someplace but don't know where right now that suggest a KLX choke set up works on this carb and is mounted to the carb. I've also been told that the choke set up on a Harley 883 which uses a similar carb will bolt right on. Might be worth consideration and or investigation. carb jetting

I'm getting ready for spring riding and have some questions about carb jetting, as that is a subject I know very little about. I have removed the airbox snorkel, switched to a Twin-Air filter that seems to flow more than stock judging by my highly calibrated seat of the pants feel :-), and now the exhaust will be a bit more free flowing due to the KienTech exhaust mod. What Jesse will be doing is curing the Tweety once and for all and opening up the outlet of the stock muffler while putting an extension with a down-turn to keep rain out while parked. He tells me that the muffler will be as quiet as a stock unit, but the tone will be a bit deeper and it should flow better. He and I talked about rejetting, and he thought that I may have to go up one jet size, or shim the needle with 1 washer. It has been suggested to me that I switch to a KLX needle. Does anyone have a part number on the needle? Also, since I'm going to be in the carb for a thorough cleaning, is there a kit with all the o-rings and other consumables, or is that really not needed yet. The bike has 11,640 miles on it.
