ineffective. Utter nonsense. KLR's are hard on oil and oil analysis shows that non-synthetic oils -- motorcycle-certified or not -- tend to sheer down to 10W30 within 1200 miles, but "froth up"? Uhm, no. Put a good quality non-"fuel-efficient" oil in your KLR and ride it. All that certification means is that it's not going to hurt your clutch. No 10w40 will hurt your clutch, neither will any diesel-oriented oil like Rotella, so just put oil in the thing and ride it already.> > From what I understand a motorcycle puts a lot more demands on oil and > "regular" oil will froth up in a motorcycle and become somewhat

drop in mileage after an oil change ?
I had to look in the garage to confirm what I've been using:
Mobil 1 15W-50
I've also used Rotella T 15W-40 and on rare occasions,
some generic 10W-30.
My bike(s) get the same gas mileage regardless of the oil that
I use - I check mileage at every fill up.It's usually 50-60 MPG
depending on how and where I am riding.

A few years ago I measured a Kaw. 16099-004 filter for the KLR650. Length across grommets: approx. 56.3 mm Length across metal end caps: approx. 54 mm Brand name oil, fuel and air filters sold in the U.S. are made all over the world today ~ the most unusual to me were filters for my Toyota from NAPA, an air filter from South Africa (didn't fit properly, returned) and fuel filter from Russia (grudgingly used it since the car was being sold). drop in mileage after an oil change ?
Your rabble has been roused.....................ATF was a common
transmission oil for the two stroke monsters of the '70's. Gotta remember
that the transmission sat in it's own little oil bath, the crank and
cylinder was lubed by the fuel mix/oil pump or leaky transmission seals.
The only other oil that was commonly used was various weights of Torco
transmission oil. They had special weights for Beezers, Trumpets and the
Hardleys of the period. What the hell, it worked 11,000+ miles.
I put a set of Denco chambers on my '73 H1, cleaned up the ports and ran
colder plugs, B10HV NGK's, reinforced the steering neck, Koni shocks,
spacers on the front springs and put an interference-fit swingarm bushing
kit and decent set of Dunlop K81's and ran it like I stole it. San Diego
was a lot less developed back then and there were lots of places where I
could beat up Honda 500's and 550's and out drag the venerable 750's. Give
the CB750 a good half mile and he'd limp away from the steamed up H1, but I
could eat 'em up on the downhill part of the old Pomerado Road...out past
where they tested the Atlas rocket engines.
The theory was that ATF was made to be beaten to death in the automatic
transmissions of the '70's muscle cars and the specific output of my little
500 cc Kaw was just a shade more that my '71 Charger Daytona with the 440
and SixPack. With an automatic tranny...........C4 Torqflite, IIRC.

In my KLR using Rotella T 15w/40 dino oil with 7 oil analysis reports all over 500 miles and up to 2,000 miles the oil still tested as a 40w. Now granted that's my bike and others may have different results but my data doesn't support either statement you've made above. I have seen Valvoline 10w/40 shear to a 20w in 1,385 miles and the sample before it was over 1,500 smiles and it was still a 30w. But in both cases it didn't hold up like Rotella. 60 mpg ?
Huh I have recorded in the mid to low 30's, reckon I aint being
accused of being a limp wrist hey !!!!!, but that was low geared and
mostly in the woods/gravel roads/swamp type mileage check.
But seems maybe 40~45 mpg is more the normal for my style of riding.

Rotella T 15W/40 is not a 10W40 oil so isn't applicable for my second comment, and note that I said "tend" on the first comment, which is one of those things called a "weasel word" which admits that there are some oils -- like the one you point out -- that do not shear down as quickly. Which is one reason why the Rotella T 15W/40 just went into my new V-Strom> over 500 miles and up to 2,000 miles the oil still tested as a 40w.

Right. As I noted, 10w40 oils tend to shear down to 10w30 fairly quickly in the KLR. I don't recall who did the oil analysis showing that it was down to 10w30 within 600 miles (maybe our new KTM owner?) but it did shear down pretty quickly.> before it was over 1,500 smiles and it was still a 30w. oil consumption in 2008 klr's
I ran across this on ADVrider.com and thought I'd share it.
It appears that Kawasaki now has a fix for those 2008 KLR's that consume too
much oil at highway speeds.

So far I've not been able to find anything on the Kawasaki website.
