Back in the early '70's we used to mix wax and graphite, clean the
chains with kerosene, get the mixture really hot and dunk the chain in
there for a bit, then HANG then out to dry. Really helped on sandy and
or muddy MX courses from back then about South Louisiana and Texas.
Only once did I not hang one up and it would not fit. Had to re heat
it and hang it out.
I don't know how the orings would take this kinda heat thought. Not
gonna try either.

I guess I shouldn't pass along 2nd hand info without verifying it first. I don't think they were talking about something falling on your toes from above, guillotine style. My take on it is that if something were to flex the shoe far enough, the steel toe might do some damage to the metatarsal bones on the top of your foot . One thing that my riding boots have that steel toe shoes don't is armor for the ankle bones, and we all know how much that hurts when you get whacked there. I put some Dr. Scholl's inserts in mine and they walk a bit better but not like hiking boots.

How can steel-toed boots amputate your toes? Right off, I'd think anything
that can collapse the steel protection would have guillotined your toes if
you didn't have the steel. MythBusters did a good review of this and
concluded the same thing.
But perhaps there's another danger I'm not thinking of?
thanks,
Chris
