No vacuum, I guess there are a lot more differences from the KLX vs KLR.

David,

I'm thinking you could pull the petcock and lube the internals. You
could also drain the tank and inspect the innards at the same time. On
airhead BMWs we use silicone grease to lube the petcock parts. Works
very well and a little goes a long ways. You can find a very small tub
of it in the plumbing supply section of most hardware stores. Remember,
a little goes a long way.

Hi, tried to start my bike today. and it didn`t fire up. sounds like not
getting gas . Pull hoses off the petcock and turn it to the on position
, no gas same for reserve. I don`t believe the petcock is vacuum feed?
The bike only has 1,400 miles and it`s a 2001 and it has been sitting
for the last 2 months but before that it was fine. DOES anybody out
there have a clue why i`m not getting gas and what steps I should start
taking??????? THANK YOU for ALL HELP!!!!!!!!!!

You believed wrongly. It is vacuum operated, though some bikes have a prime setting instead of an off setting. Make sure that the vacuum line going into the back of the petcock is installed correctly and is not crimped. You can test it by disconnecting the feed line from the carb and cranking the bike over. If it's working fuel should, of course, be coming out of the feed line. Z DC A5X A12X> Hi, tried to start my bike today. and it didn`t fire up. sounds like not > getting gas . -------------- Well, the petcock is vacuum enabled. Did you find gas in the float bowl? Mike T A16 Las Vegas> -----Original Message----- > From: garalpar@... After reading in one of the posts about how the petcock works on a
vacuum only when the engine is running, it reminded me of my Maxim. On
the Maxim the petcock also works on a vacuum so I don't have to turn off
the gas; however, it is prone to leak into the crankcase after some time
and really ruin your day. Does the KLR have the same woes?

Spain, It can leak after a while. It can also fail and plug up if the internal gasket in the petcock starts to crumble. Chris at bigcee.com used to sell a kit that eliminated the vacuum feature, turning it into a manual petcock. One thing that's been posted about the bike requiring vacuum to feed fuel. Not all years of the KLR have the same petcock. I've seen off, on, reserve and prime positions on the various petcocks. Obviously, no petcock has all 4 positions. My experience has been that they either have the prime or the off position. The prime position is obviously designed to flow fuel whether or not the the petcock has vacuum to it. The reserve position in many bikes also does this. The KLR has been known to suffer from fuel starvation due to a failing petcock gasket, failing or hot or weak-walled vacuum line, or a fuel filter combined with less than a couple of gallons in the tank. The sintered brinze filter seems to be less sensitive to this. Some people have sugggested that the petcock be rebuilt every 2 to 3 years, because the KLR is often used on trips into the nether regions......> > After reading in one of the posts about how the petcock works on a > vacuum only when the engine is running, it reminded me of my Maxim. I did the petcock mode BigCee used to sell last year. Before that I never
had a problem with fuel leaking into the crank case, after the mod, BigCee
recommends you turn off your Petcock, I had the crankcase fill with fuel
onetime I forgot to turn it off after riding. Turned out that it was a case
of crude in the gas that caused the float valve to stick open. Now I turn of
 the petcock after every ride.

Quick question-
Does the stock petcock allow the fuel to flow if the fuel line is
disconnected (On or Reserve of course)? Mine doesn't and I'm assuming
a bad diaphragm since there's no dirt in it.
 Thanks.
