Looks like a Yamaha Vision 550 in the garage. The
place where I got my post-theft repair parts has
several of those in his junkyard and shop; two runners
and about 5 more for parts.

Yup, it's an '82. It used to be my favorite bike until I got my KLR.
Here's recent pictures of it away from my messy garage:

I always liked the Vision. I have an '82 XV920RJ
that's currently dormant and suffering from living
outside. May have to sell it, since I only have
time/space for 1 bike and a running KLR pretty much
trumps a non-running anything else.

Thanks, It helps that it sat idle in my garage from 1989 to 2001, except
for when some bone-headed movers dropped a 2x4 on the tank and put a
dent in it. All I ever had to do to it is keep it clean, replace the
stator and tear down the carbs occasionally to keep the little V-twin
roaring. Next project: restore my dad's '78 CX500.

Some recent conversations have brought about some thoughts regarding rear
sprocket options for gearing changes. The 46 tooth seems like it is worth
examining but that made me think about the old trail bike system which used
an overlay rear sprocket which was carried bolted off to one side of the
regular sprocket. When low speed grunt was needed, the overlay sprocket
would be moved over top of the regular sprocket and bolted into place by
means of bolts which passed between teeth on the regular sprocket and 1/2
holes in the bore of the overlay sprocket. The chain would be reconnected
including an additional section of chain and a second master link.
I can't remember how the overlay sprocket was attached for road use but
being able to drop the gearing by inserting a 60 tooth rear sprocket or some
such, would seem to be an attractive option.
Can anyone remember how the overlay sprocket was mounted for normal use?

I don't know but it sounds like a business opportunity for Shimano.
